by Margaritaville Oct 17, '12Hi all. I've been an O.R. nurse for a grand total of 8 days and by halfway through an 8-hour shift, my legs, feet and back are killing me. I don't know if I need better shoe support, or my body is just adjusting to standing in one spot for most of the day...has anyone else experienced this? I never had this problem on a general med-surg floor, where I was hustling consistently and never felt this type of pain in my body. Please tell me your body starts to adjust. I'm thinking of buying a back brace of some sort, and getting fitted for orthotics...and I'm only 24 :'(

- Oct 17, '12 by artsmomI would definitely invest in shoes with better support. I found that it made a world of difference.

Strength training i use jilian Michaels no more trouble zones, got to warn you though its 40min but i always recommend to make sure you are off the next day when you start. Good luck. Shoes i buy Sanita brand from the European walking store, they are lighter than danskos and a better fit for me. - Oct 17, '12 by LoopsRN2I first assist and can really have some long hours on my feet/legs! If I put in 12 hours, my calves would really be sore the next day but fortunately found a great pair of Keens with very high arches. Made a world of difference! Also, have you considered Jobst stockings or some ted hose? I personally get too hot but have friends who have obtained some relief with them, with the added benefit of aiding varicose veins
Good luck!!
- Oct 18, '12 by ORoxyOMy feet killed the first couple weeks getting used to all that time on concrete floors. But then I got used to it and I'm fine now. Get a good pair a shoes and your feet will adjust.

- Oct 19, '12 by BellasMommyOBRNCompression stockings are good too! Especially for you OR nurses. I used to wear them at the hospital
- Oct 19, '12 by nursetaminatorTry the Dansko XP - they have more cushioning than the regular pair. I also wear a thick pair of Thor-lo socks. The shoes have saved my feet and made all the difference in the world how I feel after a long day. :-)slimlvn likes this.

I'm 32 and I get terrible low back pain and all kinds of foot pains but it is much improved since I switched from 12s to 10s. I rotate several pairs of shoes- no shoe is comfortable for 12 hours. Sometimes I have to switch in the middle of the day, depending on what is bothering me. Danskos surprisingly are most tolerable, also a pair of foam clogs from the uniform store (anywear) with my own insoles, and a pair of merrell slip ons.
