closing counts

  1. We have an ongoing debate on when to start closing count on Open Heart surgery. Could anyone in this forum please share when they begin closing counts when you close the chest in open heart surgery? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

where i work we start the closing count when the surgeon starts the proximals. we start with the instruments. then we will go to the small stuff. when the ankenny chest retractor comes out, then we will make sure all the screws are there. hope this helps.

I start my counts as soon as we are off pump, starting with the trays that are no longer being used. Next get a quick count on sponges and sharps, so if anything is missing I can start my hunt early.
