Utica Accelerated BSN August 2013

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Anyone else apply for this program? I just found out I got into the Utica Accelerated BSN August 2013 start date.

Hello!

I actually attend Utica ASDN and I can answer a lot of questions for you if need be.

First semester, you will attend a class lecture and lab for NUR 326 (Health Assessment) and NUR 321 (foundations of nursing). These are the classes you really want to focus on. In NUR 321 (foundations) there will be a lecture (both online and in class), lab (in class), and clinical portion. You must pass ALL three parts with at least a C + or 77% to move on. You may only repeat one course in the entirety of the program.

NUR 321 also requires you to perform "competencies" in front of an instructor. These are things like injections, wound care, and hanging IV and IVP. These are the things that you are going to need to come to the site and practice on your own time.

The other classes you will take which are fully online would be Care of Populations and Communities, which has a "clinical portion" of which you will pick a community near you and observe and write discussion posts for ~8 weeks.

Socialization to Professional Nursing- which simply requires a couple essays, a powerpoint, and discussions

Pathophysiology- entire class is online, exams and quizzes are not proctored.

I hope this helps, if anyone has any other questions, please let me know.

Great review!

so whats the 411 about UTICA everyone is hush hush about it

Mvyviennem, what do you mean by that?

Hello, do you think its possible to work full-time and go to school at Utica?

Probably not, no. It's accelerated, so I'd think working full time plus attending might spread you too thin. There's so much you have to do at one time... plus two clinicals per week, with clinical paperwork, studying for each class, projects, practicing skills, etc. I wouldn't recommend it, personally.

When are the clinical. Are the times flexible? Weekends? Evenings? I would like to do all my work on da weekends is that possible?

No. The times aren't flexible, the times you get are the times you get. There are no weekend classes, and I'm not sure about weekend clinicals in the higher semesters. I don't think you could get the amount of work done over two days on the weekend, but I guess you could try? I wouldn't. Discussions initial posts are usually due on Wednesday nights, then response posts are due saturday nights. This is for online classes.

Also, if anyone private messaged me, I can't read it, I guess my post count is too low!

Thanks for ur help what is ur schedule like now. Do u go to the ny campus? Where do u live? W roommates? Was it hard to drop everything and start the program?

No, I was from Syracuse, so it was easy, the school is only 10 minutes away from my apartment. I just quit my job and went to school.

It wasn't hard for me at all, a lot of people relocated and I think they had a little harder of a time because the area was new to them, plus adjusting to the schools schedule is hard. I just switched from doing pre-requisite classes at the community college to going to school full time.

I don't mind answering questions, it's always different hearing from an actual student vs. administration. Probably more realistic.

Have u finished school? Can u do an internship or part time job at the hospital through the school? Do u know if other students found jobs after graduation? Can u work part time during the program? Thanks alot for ur help. Also what was the admissions process like? Is it competitive to get in?

No, I haven't finished. I'm not sure about an internship, I'd ask admin, I know upstate does volunteer work that you could get into if you wanted. But you'd have to do that on your own.

So far, I have heard that every student who has graduated and taken/passed the nclex had a job lined up. 4 I heard were nurse managers.

Admissions process is similar to any other school, go to open house, make an appointment with admissions to get questions answered, fill out paperwork and wait. The wait was long. I was conditionally accepted when I got my acceptance, assuming I got at least a C in all my pre-reqs.
