Tidewater Community College 2013-2014 Nursing

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I would like to start a new thread for all the nursing students who got accepted into the Tidewater Community College Beazley School of Nursing 2013-2014. I will be starting in the August cohort and would like to meet some of my future class mates. If you are in another cohort, please add to the thread and we can all share information. Best of luck to everyone who will be nursing students this fall and spring!

How are you guys paying for nursing school if you don't mind me asking? Are you paying your own way? Using financial aid alone, or having to take out student loans? Do any of you happen to be military spouses and using MyCAA? I'm trying to figure out how I will go about paying my way through this. I'm about to start receiving aid from MyCAA this fall, so that will take care of a lot of it, but whatever is left I'm going to be using financial aid also. Will this be enough to cover everything or do you think I will need to still take out any loans? Will financial aid pay for the uniform, shoes, and all of the other things we need? Thanks for any info. :) I have a lot of questions, if I think of any more expect me to be back!

Mandiiieee,

I am using MYCAA to help offset the expenses of school but keep in mind that MYCAA only pays for tuition costs. They do not pay for books, uniforms, etc. For that, I am getting grant money and scholarships. I am hopeing that with all these considered, my cost will be minimal out of pocket. Financial aid (scholarships and grants) will pay for the other items such as uniforms, books and other medical equipment that we need. I hope this helps and good luck to you. If you need further info, send me a personal message and I will try to help you as best I can. Thanks for your post.

Is anyone else nervous/excited for orientation on monday???!!!! :)

spicersweeney, YES! I am nervous and excited at the same time. I can't believe it is almost time to start. This is going to be an excited and stressful few years! See you on Monday!

Hey...so orientation is Monday!! I just wanted to let yall know, if it's anything like my orientation was, the people who speak might try every possible method to scare the poop out of yall. Do NOT be intimidated by these folks. Honestly, the person who led mine was a disaster. I won't even get into it, but it was because of her that I spent the first six months of the program absolutely petrified. I hope, hope, hope yall have a speaker(s) who is encouraging and helpful and not the opposite. If you have any questions or need anything cleared up after Monday, I'm more than happy to truth-tell or dispel any rumors. Just keep in mind when you're there sitting in that room that I sat there two years ago. I was terrified, intimidated, and kept thinking, "there is no WAY I can do this program". I passed NCLEX on June 18th and I start my job on Monday!! Yall are going to great. I have no doubt!! :)

2Sugars, Thank you so much for that post. It does help to clear my mind and not let them freak me out. I have always noticed in situations like this, they always try to scare the pants off the new people. I think it is a way of weeding out those who do not really want it that badly and maybe to push everyone to be on their toes and do their absolute best right out of the gates. Thanks, and if I have any questions, I will definitely be sending a message to you!

Regina, thank you so much for responding! I added you as a friend and tried to figure out how to private message you but I'm not sure how. So if you can message me that would be great. :) (How would I find that message also? haha I'm new to this site.) That makes me feel better. I am terrified of loans, so if I can avoid that I would really like to. What scholarships did you apply for? And how many did you receive? I've never applied for any before so I'm not sure how easy it is to get them. Thanks again, if you can figure out how to get a message to me that would be good, or if not you can email me. rock _ my _ soxx @ yahoo . com (no spaces) :)

Mandiiieee,

I can not send the email to you. Is the correct address [email protected] or [email protected] ?

Okay, I was able to get it to send this time. In order to retrieve the email, go up to the top of the page. Under the "Colleges" tab is a link to your inbox. It has the envelop logo, click on that to take you to your inbox.

Yes I got it. Thank you. It won't let me reply since I don't have enough activity yet. Oh well. I do get FA and one of the grants you mention. And just finished the process to get MYCAA. :) I will look on the TCC site. Thank you for all of the info! I am so ready to get this started next year. Good luck to you!! Keep us posted in the thread :) I'd love to hear how things go now that you are getting ready to start.

Thanks Mandiiieee,

I will keep you updated! Have been accepted into the program or are you trying to finish up prerequisites? Don't forget with the MYCAA, you have to put in the request a minimum of 15 days before your class starts or they will not pay anything. You can request the FA up to 60 days inadvance though, I would go that route just to be on the safe side. Best of luck to you in your classes.

No I am finishing up my pre-reqs this fall. I have Micro and AP2 left. I also need to do that computer competency thing for the school but I am going to just try to do the test instead of taking the course.

That's great! Are you planning on taking A&P2 and Micro together? That's going to be a heavy load. A&P goes into a lot of depth in the physiology aspect of the course and micro is a quiz every time you go to lab. (once a week) Not sure which campus you are at but I took micro with CB and she was wonderful. I would highly recommend her for lab and lecture in VA Beach. For A&P, I would recommend CG in Norfolk. She just started teaching the lecture portion last semester and I had her for the lab. I loved her hands on approach and willingness to help everyone.

Yes I am taking them together. I am just going to pray that I can get through it. I feel like it is definitely do-able since I am a stay at home mom with only one child. I have seen that other people have taken it along with 2 to 3 other courses, on top of being a mom of 1+ children and sometimes also having a job. Knowing that people can handle all of that and still pass with A's kind of made me feel a little more confident in my decision to take them together. I'm actually in Chesapeake so VB is a little too far for me to travel especially having to pay for a babysitter. I'm taking Micro at Norfolk with MT and AP2 with MM at Chesapeake. I tried taking AP2 this summer along with 3 other courses at Norfolk with CC but I didn't take into consideration the shorter semester, so that along with the teaching style she had that I didn't really care for was making it really hard for me to keep up and do well so I dropped it. Hoping for a better time this fall.

Excited and nervous about Monday :coldfeet: Looking forward to meeting you all !!
