Samuel Merritt ELMSN CM Spring 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone!

I couldn't find a thread for Samuel Merritt ELMSN CM Spring 2017 applicants so I decided to make one!

I just wanted to see if anyone has heard back from the school yet? I got an email saying that they received my application and that my GPA and courses have been verified but thats it.

Anyone hear anything about interviews or rejections?

I saw on their website that interviews begin in mid september, so I'm wondering when they will notify us if we get an interview!

I applied for the ELMSN CM spring '17 program as well. I am basically in the same boat right now just waiting to hear back.

From what I know speaking to the advisors and NursingCAS, they have until about mid august to verify/close everything up before the consider all applications. NursingCAS only updates 2 times per year and they leave some time after application due date to verify additional documents (letters of rec/transcripts/etc). I think the final date is like august 25th or something, they actually send you an email about it.

From there they have the next month to review applications then decide who makes it to the next round for the interviews which occur i believe in october. After that you will receive email notice of being accepted/rejected and then you need to follow instructions for orientation in december as well as complete all the nursing pre-req's (immunization/physical/proof of financing/downpayment/CPR).

If you have heard/know anything different please share!

I just got the notification in NurseCas about the application received and that was about it. I did not receive any form of communication from Samuel Merritt ever since I submitted my application. It's my first choice, so I'm very anxious waiting to see if I make it to the next round.

Hello! I also applied for the Spring 2017 ELMSN cohort! I saw the estimated guideline of application processing not their website. It sounds like interviews are usually in early September. I am hoping to hear back from SMU soon! If anyone receives an invitation to the interviews, please update us!

Hi, I am currently in my last semester at SMU for CM. If you have any questions, let me know and I can do my best to answer them.

I am a current student at Samuel Merritt University (SMU) and will graduate April 2017, so excited.

I started this mentorship program for ethnically diverse students. Two colleagues and SMU is assisting me with this.

If you are applying to the SMU's SACRAMENTO CAMPUS ONLY - ABSN or ELMSN and interested in having a mentor for a year, please message me or email me at [email protected].

I'm in my 30s and it took me a long time to get here. I don't want to see other students of disadvantage backgrounds (1st generation college student, low socioeconomic background, etc.) to take such a long path.

I can also answer your questions about the ELMSN-FNP program or process.

Thank you.

Hi Lbenn!

How was your experience in the program so far? I've heard some mixed review about faculty responsiveness to cohort feedback. How did you feel about the student/faculty ratio and the clinical?

I haven't been able to visit or see the sacramento campus and live in the south bay; I am wondering if you knew how the traffic/commute situation was for the local area? (provided you attended that campus)

How was preceptorship? (or are you currently in it now?)

Did you or anyone continue part time in the program after the 4th semester?

I was considering working after sitting of NCLEX after the 5th semester.

Any info is greatly appreciated!

My experience during the RN program was wonderful. The professors are very observant and knows whether you are lazy or bs-ing them. These students did not do well and may not have gotten along with the professors. Cohort for RN was ~8/1 ratio. Clinical sites are Sutter, Dignity, UCD, Mercy and Kaiser. Really good sites in my opinion. But UCD just started or will start their nursing program so sites might be different now.

A classmate commute the first semester because it was only mental health rotation, i think. She shortly moved to Sacramento because you have clinical and prep days. Not including lecture. Fall semester is rough, you may need to crash on a sofa a couple nights. Critical care, pediatrics and women's health is in Fall. Critical care is where most people fail.

It is an accelerated program and unfortunately not everyone passes the rigorous program. The passing rate for NCLEX is pretty high for SMU, 97-99% I believe. They prepare you very well.

My friends told me she couldn't work after obtaining her license because it was fast paced. Maybe you are able to work in semester 5 part time, but she told me semester 6 and 7 is intense. She had clinical and depends on where you are placed, your drive could be up to an hour.

If you get a RN hospital job in Sacramento, you're starting is about ~$50-60 an hour. In a small clinic setting it can be $30 hr. I believe CMs can get paid $55-68 an hour.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the additional in depth info! I am trying to just look at all the angles regarding the whole program as I would prefer to not only pass but do well in the program. I changed careers later on in life so for obvious reasons budgeting and ability to begin working are in the forefront of my mind.

The 8/1 ratio seem incredible, I just attended the USF ELMSN CNL info session yesterday and they were "guessing" at best their ratio. However they were much higher in the 20-30's per faculty member and mentioned that they no longer doing preceptorship as they were before (because of issues with their partners) and are currently "in talks" about reinitiating it.

That kind of makes me feel at a loss in the program. I know that you are on the NP track (I applied for CM) but how did you feel about the preceptorship? Would losing out have made a a huge difference?

I assumed it would, but I don't have the actual experience to speak on....the USF program is relying mostly on the clinical... which is kind of disheartening since the focus is CNL and expectation to rise to leadership. Maybe they just feel that the CNL program is so good that they don't need it?

As for your mentoring program @ SAC campus that sounds awesome! If I get in (fingers crossed) I would love to have someone to bounce questions off who has already treaded the wary path.

Has anyone heard from the school yet? I'm starting to get anxious..

Hey!

I still haven't heard anything new. Tomorrow is the first of September so I am already a wreck with nerves!

Anyone hear anything?

Ok! I was not sure about when the interviews would be held. If they are in October then I will feel less anxious about not hearing anything yet! :)
