OHSU ABSN to FNP 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey all!

Long time lurker, but now that the application deadline has passed, I feel comfortable finally starting a post.

Just curious to hear who else applied to this program. It's fascinating to me to hear about people's different experiences, stats, expectations, etc. I'm also wondering what other programs people might've applied to? I got my submission in for the Portland ABSN program as well.

Best of luck to everyone! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and perspectives.

I'm aiming for an MSN for a couple reasons - first, I don't really have any interest in administration or leadership work, which is really what a DNP qualifies me for vs. the MSN. Second, lazy as this may sound, I just can't do another four years of schooling. That would effectively put me at 4 years for undergrad, 1 year of pre-reqs at Portland Community College, and then four more years after that. I know it's only a year difference, but the year means a lot to me. I'm super interested in the SHOI program too, which is probably why I'd prioritize this program over the ABSN on its own.

My calculated GPA from PSU is way higher than what NursingCAS calculated. I guess others have had the same issue in the past, but at least OHSU looks at candidates more holistically.

I've definitely heard of this issue coming up in the past, but it seems funky and not cool to me that it'd be way lower in NursingCAS. I just checked mine at it's literally only .01 off of what I'd calculated cumulatively (my main degree is higher, but I have a couple weird credits from taking high school PE classes at community college that are low), so it seems odd/unfair to me that you'd be having that issue

I think the reason that my GPA is so different is because PCC and PSU will recognize if you have repeated a course and they won't count the lower grade into your GPA, but NursingCAS counts everything. So bad grades from almost 10 years ago are what's causing it :(

Okay, that makes way more sense. It's incredibly silly the program won't do it when the schools do, but I understand now.

I applied to the ABSN and the ABSN-DNP program. I also applied to a couple MSN programs for non-nurses that I was accepted to so I'm anxiously waiting for an interview with OHSU. Just moved here from SoCal in anticipation for acceptance!

Hi, I applied to the Portland campus, absn cnm/dnp. I'm here constantly hoping that I get called for an interview. My undergrad cum gpa is 3.92 and my prerequisites gpa is 4.0. Taken everything but micro and genetics. I've heard on another thread that a and p 3 was being taken by someone, is that required? I hope I get in. I know it's a really great school and top in the country! I wanted a direct entry, but none of them had what I wanted to study...so...I applied to Ohsu, it was gonna be a choice anyways. I'd have to move if I got in, but I'm fine with that.

Hey do you know what the quality points mean on NursingCAS?

You already heard from a couple direct entry msns? I'm jealous! I'm waiting to hear from Boston College and MGH.

Hello All!

Just wanted to post in here and wish everyone the best of luck! I didn't see just a ABSN thread so I'm commenting here. I applied to just the ABSN program. A little nervous because my undergrad GPA isn't a 4.0.... I had plans to go to vet school but that didn't work out due to horrible allergies after I found out I was wait listed to a vet school.

I am surprised at how many people think they need a 4.0 to get accepted. I honestly think that the program is more holistic than merely GPA/GRE or other numeric scores. I particularly felt that OHSU's application wanted to know more about the applicant as a whole. I think that because these programs are designed for individuals who may have not previously thought of graduate school or thought about a different path, there are many factors to consider. I wouldn't worry as much about the GPA.

Hey do you know what the quality points mean on NursingCAS?

Hey! It's basically the total number points that you have earned. Each letter grade has a point value and they use that to calculate your GPA. A's are 4 points, B's are 3 points, etc. I wondered that too a few months ago :)

Ashleyelle thank you! Have any of you heard anything?
