Need advice / help! Current stats low GPA

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello Everyone,

Need everyone's input! I graduated with a BS in Biology in 2007, however my sciences are overdue for recency and because the community colleges are impacted, it is very difficult for me to get any classes! So far the only class that is up to par is Microbiology. My stats: Overall GPA is a 3.026 (but going to go up since I am taking Developmental Psychology) and my science GPA is about a 3.15. I have a medical assisting certificate and am bilingual.

I applied to Citrus College's ADN program and am waiting to hear back from them, and I also am looking into applying to out of state Accelerated BSN programs. I am 28 years old and am beginning to feel overwhelmed! I wish I would have realized that I wanted to become a nurse earlier on! I currently hold the position as a Lead Laboratory Technician for a Korean company.

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated!

drive however far you have to to retake your sciences and get a's. do all the other things recommended here for getting into school, hosp experience, volunteer, etc etc

missnurse01,

Thank you for your reply! I work full time so driving as far to get into a science class is limiting. I have gone to Norco, Citrus, Mt Sac, Chaffey, you name it! I have a B in Anatomy and a B in Physio so the recency is really my limitation. Arg!

Gosh, I feel you.

But it seems like you're heading in the right direction. I understand that some of your science courses may have expired but that may not be such a bad thing, especially if you didn't get A's in them. I also graduated with a biology degree back in 2010, and realized that some of my classes did expire as well. All I can see you doing to improve your chances are getting good grades for the remaining prereq courses and maybe putting extra focus on applying to schools that can reward your lab technician/MA experiences. I'm totally assuming that you're Korean since you work at a Korean company (I'm also Korean), so hwaiting! I hope you get good news from Citrus and the out-of-state ABSN program.

Zasaeki,

I know I shouldn't be having a pity party since it seems that everyone else is in the same position in regards to being overwhelmed and stress! Lol!

I guess I just wanted to find confirmation in myself that I AM GOOD ENOUGH! Hearing all these 4.0 gpa's and such really starts to make me doubt myself.

There are a few schools that do not require having a recency for sciences but I only know of about 4 of them! Also, I would love to start as an Adn, financially it makes more sense for me since I would have to pay for everything myself! As long as I get my foot in the door that is all that matters to me! The rest I can figure out later.

Unfortunately, I am not Korean, but I have worked there for 5 years! It is a great company and started there about a year after I graduated. But I thrive for the patient interaction, and know that nursing is my calling. :)

Oh hon, you are in the inland empire aren't you? I got my lvn at RCC. I lived in the mountains at the time, 1+ each way to and from school, worked two jobs. Not a lot of sleep. I was able to work nights and weekends, so able to drive far. That area was flooded with people going into nursing when I went 17 years ago, it took me 3 years to get into a and p. It's why I ended up as an lvn first. You could always try that and bridge over. so cal is just flooded with applicants. If you are able, I would move. I have never seen it so bad anywhere else I have lived throughout the u.s. Up here in Wa state you can just practically sign up your first quarter!

good luck

oh and yes, you are good enough!!!!

@missnurse01

Thank you so much for your encouragement! I reviewed all my stats, it looks like I will be applying to 10 ADN programs! Somebody has to take me, I can slowly start seeing the light.

woot!!!

my friend didn't have to wait down in palm desert and she didn't have a stellar gpa
