Loans BSN CSUCI & Second degree student. What to do?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

This is my first post.:inlove: I hold a degree in another field and will be applying to some California BSN and ABSN programs as well as my local community college (Ventura College). Yesterday's visit to CSUCI financial aid was a shocker, because I was told that I won't be eligible for any subsidized loans (regardless of how much I took out in undergrad). For that three year BSN program I will be possibly eligible for a max of $57,000 unsubsidized loans (4.66% interest) with a $12,500 max year. The three year cost estimate is $72,000, half of which I must finance via private loans, scholarships and the pennies I can save up here until next fall. I'm afraid to take out $72,000 dollars in loans. I applied to the locate ADN program and know that I can take CSUCI's 14 month fast pace ADN to RN program and shave off some costs but I'm relatively competitive now and I don't want to let fear of debt slow my goal down. My ultimate goal is to get my BSN (as an ELMSN program doesn't interest me now), discover what area I want to specialize in, and have the hospital or Nurse Corps loan repayment program help pay off the student loans and help me move forward to my goal of obtaining a masters. I am considering CSUN ABSN 14 month program, but i'm concerned that the program will be "too accelerated" and that for costs of saving money, I won't have as much clinical exposure and opportunities to network (i.e. externships and networking at the hospital) sites. I have a lot on my mind. I'm also considering holding off on applying to BSN programs, work as a CNA at a hospital and save save save as my as I can and apply in two years.

Thanks for reading :) Any suggestions?
