Duke University ABSN Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I just wanted to start a thread for prospective students hoping to start Duke's ABSN program in the Fall of 2018! Feel free to leave any questions or background info!

Hello, I'm also applying for Fall 2018. Is anyone else having trouble with the page limit for the essays? Anyone know if we can go over the 1 page limit by a little seeing that the heading with the long questions takes up a few sentences?

@ahuynh The page limit is rough. I agree with using the actual header feature and single spacing it!

YES! I've been having trouble fitting it all in. I've been using the actual header feature on word documents that puts the questions in the top margin! It saves a little bit of space. I'm also using one inch margins and 11pt font.

I would love to hear other people's background info! I am graduating in Winter 2018 with a BS in General Science from the Honors College at my university. My overall GPA is a 3.53 and my prereq GPA is a 4.0. As far as clinical experience, I have shadowed a few different doctors and nurses long-term and am currently volunteering as a records copier at a free clinic. I have never worked as a CNA or EMT (which I feel like they would love to see :/), but I am hoping that the fact I am in the process of preparing my undergraduate thesis for publication in a peer-reviewed journal will help my application enough overcome my lack of paid work experience in healthcare!

I'll be graduating in May of 2018 with a public health studies degree. My undergrad GPA is 3.6 and prereq GPA is 4.0. I've volunteered at a local hospital for the last 3 years on the pediatric units and will be taking my CNA certification exam this December! I've also worked as a patient care technician in a long-term facility.

On the essay upload page of Duke's application, it says, "upload statement for each question. Each statement has a maximum of 1 page, double spaced. Include question number and question as header." So there's no word count, just page limit but you have to include the question # and the question. I would hate to see you get ding for something so miniscule.

I graduated in 2016 with a B.S. in Biopsychology. I took a gap year to work and get more experience. I volunteered for a year at the hospital in various departments (Telemetry, MIU, L&D, OR) and then I got my CNA license and have been working at a skilled nursing facility for 1.5 year and ongoing. I'm excited and nervous to be applying to Duke!! I'm from CA, have been living here all my life so if I get in that means moving across the country.

Haha after posting that I actually thought I remembered reading something about posting the question in the document so I went back and found that! I probably would have noticed that before submitting but thank you!!

How many pages were your resumes (if you submitted yours)?? I'm not finished yet, but mine may be like 1.5 pages. I'm not sure if I should cut it down to a single page or not :/

I submitted a CV and it was 3.5 pages. I do not think there is a limit on the resume/cv.

Any non-traditional applicants out there to the Duke program? Anyone applying with a graduate degree (and in what field)?
