BSN+MSN Admissions Question

Students School Programs

Published

Hey guys,

new to this forum and consideration for a career in all honesty. Originally I was planning to go to PA school but after review, I saw no reason to not consider NP as they have similar responsibilities and skills available to them- in addition to the fact they are allowed to practice independently in some states. Also, a more prevalent role in Public Health, which is a potential interest of mine at some point.

Right now, I am finishing undergrad at Eastern Kentucky University in an unrelated major program and looking at BSN+MSN accelerated programs. My question sort of centers around determining what major I choose to exit with. I have some options between B.A. in General Studies with a Certificate in Homeland Security and minor in Emergency Medical Care or a B.S. in Homeland Security with minors in Emergency Medical Care and Biology possibly. I work as an EMT right now, and am also undergoing the process to get my Advanced-EMT.

Is there really any difference between the B.A. and B.S. when it comes to applying to grad schools? I'd really like to get into Vanderbilt, UAB, Emory or Hopkins- not necessarily in that order.

Thanks for the responses in advanced!

Why not just switch to nursing now?once you finish the first BS your options for funding shrink. Also, if your interest is public health go MPH disaster management

As long as you have pre req finished it doesn't matter what the rest of your previous degree is in

In homeland security we study emergency management and intelligence analysis. I'm almost finished with a degree and have a year left on full scholarship. As for funding, I am considering HPSP via the Air Force.

That answers my primary question, but there is no difference to nursing schools between B.A. and B.S. degrees? That is my primary concern because I know many PA schools and medical schools do not appreciate it.

Your best bet would be to ask that question of the schools in which you're particularly interested, in case one of them does have a preference, but, in general, direct entry nursing programs do not care about BA vs. BS as long as you've met the prerequisite requirements. I attended graduate school in a program with a direct entry track, and many of the direct entry students had degrees in things like French literature.
