Anyone out there for UT Austin Fall 2017 ?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey y'all,

Any prospective Longhorns out there? I'm an external transfer trying to break through a brick burnt orange wall (at least it seems that way sometimes). Anyway, I'm mostly done with the application process but I'm procrastinating the really important parts like the essays and the resume. How is everyone doing application-wise? Also, anyone know the admissions stats for transfers that get accepted? I want to know if there's even a remote chance I'm going to get in.

Thanks!

Hi there!

I am a senior about to start my last semester at UT Austin school of nursing. I started off as an external transfer, was accepted, then internally transferred. This was all before the new program replaced the traditional program. You no longer have to do the upper division application like before, but rather almost everyone that's admitted gets automatic admission to the nursing program. I am assuming this applies to both internal and external transfers.

If you do get accepted as an external transfer by declaring nursing as your first major, then you probably will also be accepted directly into the nursing program. Previously you had to do the upper division applications. That's been done away with completely. The new system has the entire cohort taking the exact same classes every semester and each class is pretty much packed to capacity (they are much larger than the traditional track). Some classes are even combined with freshman and sophomores. This set-up, unfortunately, leaves very little room for any new students (both internal and external) to transfer into the program mostly because of lack of space. My theory is that transfer spots are available based on the number of new program students that DROP out. What used to be a set number of available spots (40 or 80) each semester, has now become a pretty obscure number.

When I applied as an external transfer to UT directly, I had a 3.7 GPA with 52 transfer hours from CC. As an internal transfer to the actual nursing program 2 years ago, my stats were a 3.89 GPA with 36 in house hours, this included science hours. I also have several years of working as a medical assistant and am pretty active as a volunteer in multiple agencies.

I wish you the best of luck!!

Wow, I guess the odds are pretty bleak then. Any idea on the drop out rate? Lol

Surely they set aside SOME seats for transfers.

I've got a 3.7 with an Associates of Arts, PTK membership and spatterings of volunteer hours. Sooo probably not the best but I've got to try.

I've also got automatic transfer admission so that's helpful right?

And, what do you think of the program?

Thanks for replying!

The new program is in its infancy (it's about 6 months old) so I am not too familiar with all the details, but I would think that they would have at least a few spots set aside. What I do know, however, is that it's a very large cohort. I'm not really familiar with automatic transfer admission but I wonder if that applies to all majors. If so then that would work out great for you! I recommend that you make an appointment with one of their advisors to ask if this is an option. They are usually very good at replying.

You sound like a good candidate but in all honesty, many previous applicants that I have spoken to are also hitting 3.7, 3.8 GPA's with many extracurricular activities and pretty solid healthcare related volunteer opportunities/employment. Most of the students are fresh out of high school with the occasional "non-traditional" student thrown in. I wouldn't be discouraged though. You never know until you apply, right?

I liked the traditional track program more than the newer program, mainly because I feel that the people that made it through the 3 loops of fires in terms of application processes REALLY had that drive to be there. The new group is still kind of "figuring out" if this nursing thing is for them. I did not begin clinicals until my junior year, something I think is both good and bad. I would have liked to have more experience in clinicals but I also understand that I need to gather a good solid understanding of fundamentals and such. The new cohort is obtaining clinical experience in their sophomore year, along with fundamentals. Pharmacology for that group will be at the very end. A huge disservice in my opinion. The program was rigorous and really stimulated critical thinking skills. The clinical sites afforded us access to a variety of nursing specialties. The workload was semi-heavy but what nursing school isn't. UT also hosts a job fair for their nursing students and many perspective employers attend. Finally, the new medical school is right next door to the school of nursing. It will be a huge teaching hospital with endless possibilities for nursing students and new grads.

Hope this helps!

Hi ,

Im currently looking into UT Austin BSN program. I have all my courses beside chemistry! Im also almost done with my application, just unsure of how they will view my chemistry still in progress! I haven't found many post regarding their BSN program, but good luck to you hope you get in!

also do you know if someone is admitted as pre nursing, would they automatically be accepted into the upper division?

I don't think they are admitting as prenursing any longer under the new program. Everyone who applies is either accepted under Nursing or not accepted at all. Under the old traditional track program, pre-nursing students would have to apply for upper division. With the new program, courses that were reserved for upper division are now being offered in the sophomore year, hence why "pre-nursing" no longer exists. Students go straight through the 4 years without having to apply for upper division basically.

I would definitely talk with an advisor though because the new program is very new and fluid.

Hopes this helps!

Hey there!

Im applying to UT as well for this fall. I've gotten everything finished except there's a part on the application that's kind of confusing. It says to pick if you are a non degree seeking student, seeking second bachelor degree, or none of the above and enter hours. Also, any word on how long until we know if we got accepted?

I have not been notified on acceptance, has anybody else got notified?

They said we won't know until June because they want Spring grades.

I applied for the fall semester as well, where did you find the information saying they want spring grades? Does that apply to transfers?

Hello! I applied for fall 2017 external transfer. Has anyone heard back yet?
