The advantage of working oncology especially as a new grad is that you'll learn most everything you would have learned on a medical floor plus all the onc-related stuff. Cancer patients tend to have multi-system problems and can be complicated so you will definitely use your critical thinking. You will also get experience in accessing and managing central lines and multiple iv-infusions.
Good luck,

Julie, I'm glad to hear you say I'll develop all my skills b/c I too just accepted a new grad position as an Onc RN. And this is against all odds. I wasn't expected to pass my boards on the 1st try as I was coming off a very difficult final semester. But I did. And since I have very little skills to speak of, everyone (family, friends...) have been pushign me towards medsurg and CV/ICU. But the thought of cardio terrifies me.
Thank you for stating quite frankly that I will get and improve my skills. I've been struggling w/ accepting this role. I already know that teh pace and the idea of compassionate empathetic nursing is what appeals to me, much more so than the excitement of seeing the traumatic stuff.
