- Aug 28, '11 by FroggyRN-OCNThe purpose of the "Air Sandwich" is to prevent contamination of skin layers and decrease the local irritation effect. I have found it to work very well with patients that receive the divided doses. You have less of the redness and tenderness, and because you have to rotate the sites and give at least an inch from the previous site, it gives you more area to work with
