Hi--

I will be a second year nursing student in two weeks and have accepted a nurse extern position in an Oncology department for the summer. I am very excited - my managers are very enthusiastic and I think I will learn alot. I was wondering though...is there any good books that I could use as a reference just to learn a little bit more about oncology nursing?? I don't want a full blown oncology nursing text but maybe just an introduction to oncology or something that may let me know more of the patient needs and the different technologies we have for the patient's nowadays.

Thanks!!

Amy

I have two old books that I bought for a dollar at a library book sale, they might have updated versions.

Here are the names of them:

1. "Guidelines for Oncology Nursing Practice", endorced by the ONS, published by Saunders.

2. "The Cancer Experience: Nursing Diagnosis and Management", published by Lippincott.

Another idea, your unit will probably have alot of books at the nurses station to use as reference also.

And you can always use the Internet to try and look stuff up. I love these sites: http://www.oncolink.org/

Good luck this summer!
