Pediatric Oncology Question

Hello!

I'm only in my 2nd year of nursing school, but am really interested in working in peds. oncology after graduation. Is there anything I should be doing NOW to help me get into that unit later? Any special requirements I should know? Are new grads even hired into the unit?

Also, is there a journal for peds oncology? Or any additional resources?

Any answers would be extremely helpful, I'm so lost in the nursing world!!
Thanks!

My hospital hires nurses to the peds unit right out of college. I don't think there's anything specific you need to do. Just get the best grades you can, get good references, show interest in clinics, be involved in your SNA, and apple and hope for the best. Peds oncology (thankfully!) isn't a huge or quickly growing field, so it can be hard to find places hiring for that exact area. I couldn't tell you the name or anything, but I would think there's a journal. Google can probably help here.

I was hired as a new grad into Peds Heme/Onc. I don't know if I could do anything else, I love it! There is a journal, Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing. I am not sure how much it is as I receive it as part of being a member of APHON. The journal is geared toward RN's that already are in the field of nursing. The website www.APHON.org is an referance you can use.
