PCA in oncology...

I'm a CNA in TX just hired by one of our local hospitals here in Tyler. I will be working on the oncology floor. I am very excited but extremely nervous at the same time. I know to treat these patients with as much dignity as a healthy person would get. My question is is there any special precautions that I have to take working with oncology pts? Thanks so much!

Congrats!

The biggest thing is to be extremely cautious about infection control. If a patient is on isolation, be meticulous with this. Meticulous hand washing, also.

Also, some of the patients will have been in the hospital a long time and they don't always have a lot of visitors. Some will just want to talk. Try to be considerate of this if you have time.

Learning when to say what when a person just got bad news or is having a bad day is a learned skill, but patience will get you far.
