Particular experience to become an Oncology nurse

Hello all:

What experience would help a new grad R.N. (Associate's Degree) become a viable candidate for Adult Oncology? I have one more year of school left and would love to put all the pieces together before graduation next May.

I would really appreciate your suggestions and assistance! Thank you.

I am a new grad and, I would think an externship would be great to let the unit get to know you. I was a extern in ICU, but have received an offer in Oncology... go figure??? 60% of the new grads are having issues receiving jobs in the ATL area, no budgets for residency programs. 160 apps to @50 positions.
