New grad jobs in Oncology

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to ask if any of you are working on an oncology unit that is new-grad friendly. I'm currently in a "New Grad Transition Program" which is basically like clinicals on an oncology unit...except that I graduated from nursing school last July and got my license last August. I love the oncology floor that I'm on, love my preceptor and the other nurses, and of course, the patients. Sadly, this hospital won't be able to hire any new grads until the middle of next year, at the earliest... :crying2:

I live in CA and would like to stay here, but am very willing to relocate anywhere for the opportunity to work on a new-grad friendly oncology floor. I'm willing to spend hours studying and put in lots of hard work...I just need someone willing to take on a newbie! If you have any leads, please let me know! Thanks!:redpinkhe

My just wife got hired as a new grad on an oncology floor, but new orleans would be a long commute from CA. Good luck!

Where in California are you? I was hired as a new grad on an oncology floor in a hospital in Palm Springs. I had the best preceptor there too :)

Really far away, but the hospital I'm at in DC is new-grad friendly in onc (we just 4 new ones, and med onc always has openings too it seems)

Where in California are you? I was hired as a new grad on an oncology floor in a hospital in Palm Springs. I had the best preceptor there too :)

Michelle, were you at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs? If so, I'd love to hear more about your experience. For example, did you just get lucky with an awesome preceptor, or did many other new grad hires have a similarly wonderful training experience?

Yale-New Haven Hospital is amazing for new grads. I work at the Smilow Cancer Hospital, it opened only a year and a half ago... of course we have the usual nursing issues, such as short staffing and supplies not always being stocked... but I feel really lucky to love my job

Thanks for the info! What does their new grad training entail? How long are you with a preceptor for? I just looked on their website and it looks like they have quite a few openings, not sure they're open to new grads, but it looks like they are.

I had three months of orientation with a preceptor... but it's competency based, so they take you off when they feel you are ready. There's also a one year nurse residency program which is kind of a ***** fest/support group for new nurses. They're very open to new grads, especially all throughout the cancer hospital because it only opened a year ago so they had to hire tons of nurses.

Three months? That's great! I applied to a couple of jobs several days ago...I guess now I wait! I really hope I get a call!

Specializes in OP Hem/Onc Chemo infusion.

I am a RN with no hospital experience. I have been working in oncology/hematolory private practice in the chemo infusion center, with 2+ years experience. This is all I've ever done since I graduated. I have the ONS Chemotherapy Biotherapy Provider Certification and am taking the OCN exam in November, and I have ACLS. I STILL CANNOT GET A JOB IN THE HOSPITAL SETTING! I've applied for RN oncology positions at hospitals and no one is interested because I "don't have hospital experience." I think the problem may be that I am in California. I hate to have to sell my house and move, but it's to the point that maybe that is my only option. If you guys are having success in getting hired in oncology units in the hospital/acute care, please share where these jobs are! I have applied in WI and IL, and they said they had people who were "more qualified," which is what they always say, and these are for positions in oncology units. I give up.

If anyone has an idea of what might help, let me know - I'm open....
