Need help with a paper, please. :)

  1. I'm a student and I need to write a paper on a symptom of Cancer or Chemo, something with nursing interventions.

I decided to go with neutropenia, because infection is a huge thing we are trying to prevent.

Anyway, as im researching this im not exactly understanding the difference between leukopenia and neutropenia. They almost seem like the same thing.

If im doing a paper on infection is it neutropenia or leukopenia that I want to do my paper on?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Bonny619,

You have chosen a very interesting topic to write about. Neutropenia and Leukopenia are not exactly the same. Leukopenia is a decrease in circulating leukocytes (WBC). Neutropenia is of course a decrease in circulating neutrophils. A neutrophil is a type of white blood cell. Meaning a low white blood cell count does not necessarily mean a low neutrophil count. Neutropenia/Leukopenia can be a symptom of cancer but they may also occur as a result of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Neutropenia is a problem because neutrophils are "first responders" in an infection. The following websites may help you in your paper. (www. ons. org) (www.cancer.gov)

    Good luck.
