Hello, I was just offered a position for a well known outpatient oncology position. The nurses sometimes mix their own chemo. I have a friend who works for another network who has never mixed her own chemo, and as friend who works for Children's who also does not. Does anyone mix chemo? How dangerous is this? I plan to have another child in a year or 2. I have a 6 month old now. Does anyone hang chemo or mix while pregnant? This is exclusively an infusion position, and they've had pregnant nurses before. I plan to work and get very comfortable before even considering getting pregnant.
I've only ever worked inpatient and our pregnant nurses hung chemo, but never had to mix it. We did in general avoid giving chemo patients to pregnant nurses when possible though.
Mixing chemo should be done under a special chemo hood. Everywhere I've ever worked this has been the Chemo Pharmacy's responsibility, NOT nursing's.
Nope, I never had to mix chemo and I wouldn't be comfortable with it at all. I also worked inpatient and our pregnant nurses did not hang chemo nor were they assigned those patients.
