Implantable port Heparin Lock: 10 vs 100 Units (accessed every 3 days)

  1. Patient is a 49 years old female (my wife) with an implantable port which has no PASV (Pressure Activated Safety Valve).

If port is re-accessed every 3-4 days (needle removed after each access), can it be locked with 10 Units / ml Heparin 5ml fill in 10ml syringe after each access, or it must be 100 Units 5ml fill in 10ml syringe?

Port manufacturer calls for 100 Units but doesn't specify for how long port won't be accessed. I don't have 100 Units Heparin handy but 10 Units only or Normal Saline.

    Thanks.

This is something you should be discussing with your wife's healthcare team as we cannot provide medical advice per the site's TOS.
