Chemo & Vitamins

by sbj101

Is it usually recommend to take vitamins before and during chemo? The pt will be receiving Fluorouracil (5FU) and Oxaliplatin.

If vitamins are encouraged before and during chemo therapy, which ones are recommended? Thanks!!

Default Re: Chemo & Vitamins
We recommend a multivitamin only with most chemotherapy. With 5-fu or Xeloda orally, we recommend Vitamin B6 to help with hand/foot toxicity. With Alimta the patient takes daily folic acid and B12 injections every 9 weeks both are initiated a week prior. (to decrease hematological and stomach complications Also with Alimta NSAIDS need to be stopped 5 days before and 2 days after treatment as it can increase toxicity by decreasing drug clearance from the kidneys.
