best oncology hospital in the US

by susieok

Hi,

I'm an Aussie RN looking at travel nursing in the US. I work in Oncology/Haematology here in Australia and figure if i'm going to come all that way, i may as well look into developing my education and experience in one of the countrys' best cancer facilities!

So...which are the best oncology hospitals in the US? where are they located? which one/s has the best reputation for current practice and research? what are the best ones from a nursing perspective? do you know if they take on travel nurses?
whilst i have haematology experience, i don't have BMT, so not looking hospitals specialising in BMT only.

I am registered/licensed in CO and VT, and have some understanding of the hospitals in CO that have cancer units, such as UCH, and Porter, but know nothing about VT.

thanks for your help.

Welcome!!!! I am a strong advocate for any NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) facility. NCCN is recognized as the "standard of excellent care in oncology. THey have established guidelines for each cancer, supportive care and advocate for all pts to be on a clinical trial to identify the best care for their cancer.
Check out their website: NCCN.org.
I'm in Boston, so that would be Dana Farber (out pt) and Brigham and Womens Hospital and Childrens' Hospital Boston. Any NCCN institution will be probaby the most superior in providing care for cancer pts.
Good luck!

Oops, sorry, I didn't completely read the states you were looking into Susieok- no NCCN centers in VT, or CO. I think Roswell in NY is closest to VT, and really nothing is close to CO. If you pull up the NCCN map, most centers are on the coasts... Too bad for those in the mid west....
Good luck!

MD Anderson - Yes! I've been hearing&reading nothing but good things about that hospital. When I'm done with nursing school I would love to get hired on over there. They really seem to care about their nurses and they have so many great educational & training programs there. I've also read (mainly on this site) that the pt to nurse ratio is low and the nurses there are great to work with & are helpful (which is something I'm looking for when I'm straight out of NS!)

MD Anderson in Houston Texas. My husband was a pt there and I am currently doing a nurse externship there. It is one of the best hospitals I have every worked for. Good Luck.
