Published

hello all,

i will apply in the fall of 2009 at ou to hopefully start in june 2010.

are there any students (present or past) that know what gpa will be needed to be competitive?

thanks,

okie1

At the OK campus, from what I have learned through others, the didactic portion is primarily on campus but portions of the course maybe online or independent study, as well as certain courses. Sorry I cannot answer more thoroughly, but I am not currently attending the program. I too would like to learn more. Some of OU's other programs have the course listing online with course objectives and when you take them. This would be helpful because I am not currently taking classes but I have been studying up on past materials, I just wish I knew what the first semester holds. But, I have not yet found this material on the website.

LaLaws,

Yes, I am at the OKC campus. We do have actual classes we go to for Health Assessment, Pharmacology, Acute & Chronic etc. They are all pretty much optional because everything was designed to be done on line. However, in Pharm there were actual days that were were told were not optional and those were mainly for review prior to tests. I start out going to class, but usually by the end of the semester I stop going, especially if it doesn't seem to be very beneficial to go. Sometimes it just helps to get a brief overview of the material if I haven't started reading yet.

Hello Everyone. I too have applied to the Summer 2010 OU ABSN program, but I have applied for the one here in Tulsa. I'm still waiting, ever so anxiously, for a letter in the mail. Does anyone know, I've been told that they tend to focus heavily on the science classes, is this true? Thanks to anyone who has any insight!!

i would think that admission would weigh pretty heavily on the sciences. being that it is a challenging, fast-paced program it will be important to know that the applicant won't need tons of refresher and that there is a strong grasp on the prerequisite sciences. i am sure there is plenty of wiggle room when it comes to people with previous healthcare experience though. there are so many things that can weed people out when it comes down to it. because they only take about 1 out of 4 applicants, it is impossible for us to predict whether or not we got in. on the page below, under counselor links it has the 2009 admission stats. the thing is that every year the pool of applicants is diverse so one year varies from the next. you may have seen this before but if not it's good information to know.

i wish you the best of luck and i hope to see you at orientation in the spring! keep me posted when you hear something back, i am anxiously waiting as well!

I am anxiously awaiting too!!!! Ugh I wish I knew NOW what to expect. I figure it is only a matter of a few days before we start to get our letters. I was told end of February from more than one source. I am not too optimistic that I will get in to this program because I am currently taking the Microbiology course. I already took it once but it wouldn't transfer so I am sure that will be a major strike against me. :( Other than that though, I have a great GPA. I did see in that email that was sent out that over 200 people applied...so..that stinks.

If ANYONE gets a letter from them please post it on here!!! Good luck and I hope we all get in. :)

I got my letter and I got in! Yay! I am so pumped, I cannot wait to get started. I hope to see all of you there! Good Luck!

Congrats! That is exciting. I don't get my mail until later today...now today is going to drag by sooo slowly! :(

They usually do the mail in cycles so don't get to down on yourself if you don't get it today. Keep your head up, things happen for a reason.

So...mail came and NOTHING. Blah! I know they will send it either way though. So...have you looked at your application status since you got accepted? I wonder if there are any changes. I have been checking it obsessively since I applied haha! The crazy thing is is that I am probably going to turn OU down but I still want them to want me!

Haha this conversation is making me so nervous - and I haven't even applied yet!! I'm applying this fall for the summer 2011 start ABSN at OU-Tulsa. I'm finishing up my last pre-reqs this spring and summer, so hopefully having them all totally done, grades in, by the time I apply will help my application look strong! I have a 3.8 GPA, and have gotten nothing by A's on all my post-Bachelor's pre-req coursework (including Micro - woohoo!), unfortunately, I took Chemistry years ago as a freshman just starting my BA and wigged out that I was going to fail and took it Pass/Fail, which I'm sure looks terrible (even though I passed!) to not have a grade there, though the OU-Tulsa advisor told me they'd accept it. And I got a B in Intro to Biology...because I was a history major and didn't care about bio or think I ever would! Stupid 18 year old me.

Anyway, here's a practical question that you folks might be able to help me with: other than the pre-reqs the program specifies and a solid GPA, is there anything else you took or did to increase your chances? I have the opportunity to take a Pharm. and Dosage Calc class in the fall - is OU even going to care? I don't expect it to transfer or get me out of the Pharm. in the program, but I think I will take it anyway just to get a head start on Pharm. I have 2 years of hospital employment experience, 1 as a CNA and 1 as a cardiovascular/EKG/Rapid Response tech.

Any advice you would have given yourself a year ago while making plans to apply and doing pre-reqs?

Congrats to those that have gotten in already and best wishes to those of you still waiting to hear!

You sound like you should have no problems getting in. Seriously. Your grades are stellar and that is what matters. Go to their website and compare your stats to what has been accepted in the past. I wouldn't take the Pharm and Dosage Calculations unless it would transfer. It might help you but you still have to take it anyways so unless you just have the time and money to kill I wouldn't take it, unless it transfers..

I am also waiting to hear from OU OKC campus for admission to the ABSN program. Has anyone else received their admission letter? Does anyone know if they send a letter if you do not get into the program?
