OCCC nursing school

U.S.A. Oklahoma

I am applying for the BADNAP (accelrated nursing program) at OCCC in Feb. and was wondering if anyone on here has completed it. I have heard great things and I have heard terrible things so I just wanted to get some additional insight. Thanks!

Amy,

The counselor told you 30 days? I called the nursing department and they told me 8 weeks. OCCC is not the most well organized school though so who knows.I think they are accepting 60 in this coming class but I may be wrong.

Interesting. I would probably believe the Nursing department over the counselor. I hope they tell us sooner than later. I hate waiting. I am glad they are accepting so many. I also applied to OU's accelerated BSN program and should find out end of this month on that...

Hi Amy,

So you are applying to the ABSN at OU. I know a lot of people who went through that program. If you get into that will you choose it over the OCCC program? Also, could you post when you recieve your OCCC letter? YOu don't have to tell whether you were accepted or not. A general time frame to expect the letterwould be great. Thanks so much!

I am not sure which one I will pick if I get into both. I kind of think I would pick OCCCs because it is cheaper and I live really close. Then I can get a job and work towards my BSN one night a week, ya know??? But I will definitely post on here when I get my letter!! Today I was dying to check the mail but reminded myself it was a holiday so I will just have to wait until tomorrow to obsess. :)

hey...you said that you know a lot of people who went through the OCCC program. Just wondering, what have they said about the program, as far as difficulty, quality, competition for entry, that sort of thing, if you know. Thanks!

My cousin went through the BADNAP and she really liked it. She didn't give me specifics though. I know that each year the competition is different so I am sure it varies. I would expect if you have the college's minimum GPA then you should apply and see what happens. Other than that I don't have any info for you. OliveMay might know more. Most of my friends went through OU for nursing.

Hey guys,

I can olny tell you what the counselors told me. When I turned in my application they said that the average GPA accepted for entry into the program was a 3.3. That may change this year though because of the economic situation so many people are going back to school. If you have anything close to a 3.3 you should definately apply though. From what I understand a good percentage of the people wait-listed for the BADNAP program get offered spots because people will get accepted to multiple programs and choose one over OCCC (like Amy). I've been looking into the program for a while so if you have any questions I would be happy to try and answer them. Good luck!!

I do have one more question...do you know if occc offers any of the science prereqs online or as intersession courses? I would still need to take four science courses before applying for next year's program but I am concerned about getting all the courses done before the application date. Thanks for your help!

Hey,

I don't think they do because all of the sciences have a lab component. I was in the same situation that you are in last semester. I ended up having to take micro online through the colorado community college consortium. OCCC accepts it because you do the labs at home with a labkit you have to purchase. It should be a last option though. It's very expensive and the most time consuming class I have ever taken. You don't know busy work until you take this class. For me, I had to do it. In order to apply for the OCCC program you have to have all the pre-req's completed by january before you can apply even though the program starts in June. I personally think this is absolutely ridiculous but whatever, I don't make the rules.

I do know that OSU-OKC offers Chem 1314 during summer intersession. I would think long and hard about taking it though. It's taught by the head of the science department and only 1 month long. That means a chem test a week plus lab EVERY DAY. If you think you can handle that much chem, go for it. I was enrolled in the course but had to drop it and ended up taking Chem 1214 during the normal fall semester which was VERY doable. A note on OSU-OKC chem courses as well, if you plan on applying to either OSU-OKC or OCCC then Chem 1214 will work (it's much easier). However, if you plan on applying to OU or UCO, chem 1214 won't transfer as their chem requirement. You HAVE to take Chem 1314. No one told me this when I enrolled and unfortunately I found out too late to change classes so I couldn't apply to the OU ABSN program.

That was really long, sorry about that. If you have any other questions, let me know

As far as I am aware, OCCC does not offer science courses online. Well, at least the ones that you need anyways. I have been taking lots of courses at OCCC and never heard of any of the science classes online or as intersessions. They are time consuming classes that require a lab. Most of the classes are 5 hours, which includes the lab. There are classes offered over the summer but be aware that they are incredibly intense. I was going to take human physiology over the summer but decided against it after I saw the syllabus. They had one test a week! Also, my friend who took that course said that out of the 30 who were in that class, only 8 finished! So..yeah...I wouldn't do a hard course like physio over the summer. Maybe microbiology. Which classes do you have left? I am not as familiar with the BADNAP as OliveMay but I don't know if there are any other times to apply for the program other than January. I am pretty sure the program is only offered June through March. But, like I said, I don't know exactly what is offered at OCCC. It sounds like you might have enough time to take at least a couple classes in time to apply for next year! I would take one over the summer and then try to take as many as you can in the fall.

I would like to add to what OliveMay wrote above about Microbiology....

The Nursing department and counselor told me that they are changing what they accept for Microbiology. This is the last year that they accept some of the other community college's Microbiology. I took mine at Rose State and starting next year, OCCC will no longer accept their micro. Just a heads up. The good thing about most of OCCC's classes is that they transfer almost anywhere. Except their physio and human anatomy might not if you take them together. I took mine seperate so I could go to OU if I want.

I just got my letter from OU ABSN and I am on the wait list! Blah! I am now really really anxious to hear from OCCC! I am thinking good thoughts because I got into UCO's program, waitlist at OU...so maybe that means I could get into OCCCs???

When have other years received their letters? I know OliveMay said the department said 8 weeks. I hope it isn't that long!
