lpn to bsn @ ou tulsa - questions

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

Hi. I was recently accepted to the lpn to bsn program at ou Tulsa. I will be relocating to Tulsa from Los Angeles CA in 4 weeks. I was wondering if anyone has done or is in this program and can tell me what to expect. I have asked a few of the administrators about the required clinicals and have just received the answer of " it will be covered in detail at orientation" The problem is, is that I am looking for a job in Tulsa and have been asked on phone interviews what schedule I will have at school. At this point I have nothing to tell them. Any information, or stories of personal experience will be of help. One more thing, I have 10 years of experience as an Lpn, 8 of which has been in Hospice/home health, where is a decent place to work in the Tulsa area?

Thanks for any help!!!

Okay lpn student here. From what I hear; BEST PROGRAM IN THE STATE! Because you will be able to work and your clinicals are weekends. That's the only time you have to show up!

They obviously dont treat you like a kid like some LPN programs do. Just make sure you keep up with your studies, RN is the real nurse, LPN is like introductory. ALOT of info because RN is responsible for alot more. So don't expect the curriculum to be just a "gimme."

The pay wont be as great as in Ca either, but lpn makes "ok" cash, and I think last I checked, there was about 40+lpn positions open in tulsa, like 200+ in OKC and surrounding areas. Problem is, LPN=mostly nursing homes. If you can handle that, then it's okay. Check with these guys too; www.oklahomajoblink.com

No, sorry. You go to your lectures one Saturday per month. Your clinicals are during the week sometime, what schedule I still don't know. You also have to go one or two times during the week, just not every week, for tests, ect. This upcoming semester I have to attend class physically 14 times, not including the clinicals. I know they make it sound like it is only done on Saturday, but 14 times really isn't bad when compared to other programs out there, especially in California.

I was just wondering about the reputation of places in and around Tulsa, I have interviewed with St. Francis, OSU medical center, and hillcrest, and a few assisted livings / hospices but I was wondering if any place had a good reputation for taking care of their nurses. You know the stuff that gets passed around by word of mouth.

St. Johns takes care of their own, I can say that from experience.

(and congrats on getting in, it IS the best program in the state, hospitals always hunt for OU grads, I graduate in May, and I couldn't be more excited!!!)

Congrats on getting accepted! In my opinion St. John's and Hillcrest are very good hospitals. I like that OSU Med and HIllcrest has a residency like training program for new grads. for example if you want to do ER they have a 16 week program they put thier nurses through. I am hoping to get on their soon. I have worked with St Fran pm me if you want more info about it there. I believe all 4 hosp have scholarships. There is Southcrest in Tulsa as well. i know a nurse who has been there for years prob close to 15 or more. It is a good hospital. small not big like the other hosp in tulsa area. THere is a new spine and brain hospital but not sure what that is like. Also when looking for a place to live in Tulsa if you are not sure where to live avoid, east tulsa, north tulsa and west tulsa (across the river) mid town has nice places to live and OU is in the area. ALso south tulsa is a good place.

isnt that a 9 month program? 1 or 2 times a week to show, that's a dream!:yeah:

I would trade places with that any day. Some programs for lpn; if you miss 10 classes out of 220 they dont allow you to graduate- which means you can't take the statewide exam.

RN is the real nurse, LPN is like introductory

Last time I checked, my license said "Licensed Practical NURSE".

Not tryin' to make waves, but please be respectful of your fellow nurse, whether LPN or RN....

Does any one out there know the drop out rate for the LPN to BSN program in OUHSC. A friend told me its the hardest way to become an RN.

Hi there!

Congrats! I just found this program 2 days ago. I called today but I am not sure how the program works. I live in San Antonio. I was told that I could do clinicals locally. I don'y have a clear understanding of the program. I know it is a 9 month program. Everything is online. There is suppose to be 1 clinical a monthon a Saturday from 8am- 5 pm. Please let me know if you have any further info. You can email me at [email protected]. Thanks and luck!
