I am wanting to test out of OB/Peds before I start TCC's LPN to RN bridge in August. Does anyone have the Excelsior books and/or Chancellor's notes that I can borrow or buy? Does anyone have experience doing this?

If you are intending to enroll in Excelsior for their degree program, then you will find that OB/Peds is a portion of one of the nursing concepts exams. You can take NC 1 prior to enrolling and if you are an LPN, you can be exempted from NC 2. However, NC3 through 7 can not be taken until you are enrolled. You need to enroll prior to Sep. 30 as they are changing the curriculum. To find out what the content areas of each exam are go to the Excelsior website and print out the study guides for each exam. Their website is http://www.excelsior.edu.

I only want to take OB/Peds from Excelsior and need the textbooks and wanted to hear experiences.

You might try the Distance Learning/Independent Study Forum or the General Nursing Student Discussion. Because those exams don't count toward an Excelsior degree, you may get few responses. Most of the testers for those exams are, like you, taking them for credit while enrolled in traditional programs.

Dotti,

I took the mental health one earlier this month. It pretty much covered the kinds of things they have in the exam content guide. I spent time reviewing my ATI book for mental health as well as reading areas in the mental health nursing book that is recommended that I felt weak in. It was a lot of psych theories as well as medications/side effects, nursing diagnosis type stuff. I got an A on it but according to the guy at the testing center that doesn't happen often. Don't know how true that is. I've already sold my book to someone else.

I've got the books for the maternal child and am slowly working my way through them. The maternal child test doesn't have to be taken before starting the program (although it would be easier!), just has to be done before enrolling for the spring semester.

Good luck!

Excelsior does not work that way.You cannot take only OB/Peds. Sorry, you'll have to explore other options unless you want to do your whole program through Excelsior.

i am confused are you wanting to take this test thinking you will not have to take it in your lvn to rn program or are you going the ec route.

Your posts are confusing. TCC is usually involved with preparing people for the EC program or now, also the ISU program. If your intent is to try to test out of these subjects, you will find that most programs do not allow for testing out. If this is what your intentions are, then you have to contact the school beforehand and find out what their requirements are. Excelsior prints warnings on their website that students are responsible for finding out the suitability of individual tests for their programs. Additionally, the nursing concepts tests beyond NC1 are no longer available to the general public, only enrolled students. Only the other listed nursing content tests can be taken by anyone, with the above mentioned warning. Good luck with whatever your plans are.

I think my posts state want I am going to do. I am an LPN and I am enrolled in the TCC LPN to RN bridge program. TCC's director of the LPN program told me what Excelsior course number to take to test out of the OB/Peds semester at Tulsa Community College (TCC). It is allowed, people have done it and I will attempt to do it as well. As Lana alludes to we can also test out of the Maternal portion of the TCC LPN to RN program. What I was looking for was people in the Tulsa area who may have had experiences and/or Ob/Peds books to share/sell cheaper than Excelsior. I probably didn't make that last statement crystal clear but then I was posting on the Oklahoma board... If there are any folks in the Tulsa area that fit that bill please let me know.

Not everyone knows that you were referring to Tulsa Community College and you never stated that you had been given the required info. When posting on an online forum, you have to keep in mind that it is easy to misinterpret statements and abbreviations. And unless you place restrictions on your thread, readers are allowed to read and respond to anything on the board. Good luck with your program. BTW, your last post was not confusing.

Point taken caliotter3. How would you recommend I place restrictions on my threads in the future that I intended for the Oklahoma folks?
