CNA at St Francis while in nursing school!

U.S.A. Oklahoma

So I just accepted a job as a CNA at St Francis in Tulsa to give me some great experience while I'm in nursing school. I'm still working on my prereqs for TCC's RN program, hopefully I'll get to start that program Spring 2014, depending on how many of my prereq classes are available before then. I'm so excited about this job because St Francis is a great hospital, and they have a contract with OU-Tulsa, which is where I want to get my BSN. I'll be on a cardiac ICU stepdown unit, which is going to be great experience for me. I'm so excited! Anybody have any recommendations for how to maximize my learning potential with working in a hospital while in a nursing program? I know I'm going to have a ton of information available to me, and a ton of experienced people around me, so how can I get the most out of it? I appreciate any suggestions!

Sounds like you're already on the right track! I did the same thing and I was able to work with a couple of nurses that knew I wanted to learn as much as I could so they let me follow them quite a bit and watch what they did and if it was something I could assist with they would let me do that too! I loved it. It was a definite confidence booster. Best of luck to you!

I did the same thing, on a telemetry unit. The only thing I would add is to take advantage of their extern program. I externed in the ER there and an ICU, very helpful in choosing what I wanted to do out of school. Float when they ask you to float, learn new areas if you can and just be observant and you'll do great.

How does the extern program work? I'm currently a tech in the children's hospital and should be done with my LPN in the spring and am hoping to go on with a bridge program
