Can an OK student nurse challenge the CNA exam?

Hi everyone,

I am a RN student at Murray State College and I would like to get some experience working in a hospital before I graduate (in 2013) and earn income. I have noticed a lot of hospital sites that are hiring CNA's say that the requirements are either a CNA license or so many semesters of clinical experience in a nurse program (the semester length varies on facility). I was just wondering, can a student nurse challenge to take the CNA exam without having to take a CNA program? I have read that other states do allow this, but can't find any information about it in Oklahoma. Thanks for the help everyone! Enjoy your Friday!!!!

Not sure about the CNA, but some nursing colleges here in Tulsa after the 1st year can take the PN boards and work as an LPN so you might check into that. Best of luck!

I found this on OBON website,

To qualify for writing the NCLEX-PN via the equivalency provision, you must have

successfully completed a minimum of one academic year of an RN nursing education

program approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing or a similar board in another state, with a

minimum 2.0 GPA and a grade of “C” or higher in all nursing courses

Thank you both! I called the BON and they told me the information, I had no clue that I could challenge the LVN exam, thank you both! I would not have even known that I could do this without your answers. As far as the CNA, I was told that I could challenge the CNA after working as one for so long, but I think since I don't have to much longer to wait, I will just wait and challenge the LPN exam. Thank you very much!

Thank you both very much! I will keep you posted for sure! I got a call today from Mercy Memorial (I have heard it isn't the greatest hospital to work at, but I had my baby their, and everyone seemed nice and the hospital was really nice) and the HR lady told me to give her a few days and she would find a position for me and I could start working somewhere in either labor and deliver, ICU, or the 3rd floor, as a tech (she said they had nurse techs, monitor techs, and a few other positions) and then I could apply for the extern program next year. So, I hope to get my foot in the door that way when I get my RN (not until summer 2013) I will have experience. Thanks again for all the help ladies. I can't wait for my first year to be up and sit for the LPN exam. :)

I don't know why you would want to challenge the CNA exam when you can challenge the LVN/LPN exam???
