Anyone work at st johns?

Ok, so I have an interview next wednesday at st. johns on 9 west. I had originally went in for a cna position, but as of right now they have no daytime cna positions open, so my interview is for the unit secretary of that floor. Also, if hired for the job they are going to train me on the cardiac monitors. Its mon-fri 7-3 and every other weekend, so I had a few ?'s for anyone who works there! First off, how much is the insurance there, its just me and my 3 yr old, thats why Im asking. Are Fridays considered a weekend day or is it just saturdays and sundays? Also, would I get paid a shift diff for the weekends I work? What EXACTLY does a unit secretary do? And one last really stupid question, do they have to wear scrubs? Im sorry thats so many questions! Because 9 west is a new floor, a lot of their staff has been training on my floor, including their evening unit secretary. Let's see if I can answer your questions...

1 - insurance for employee only is about $30/month, for you and your son it would be a little over $100, although new rates will be coming out soon.

2 - Fridays are NOT considered weekends, just Sat/Sun. I would ask them what your schedule would be when you work weekends because that would essentially leave you only 2 days off every other week.

3 - unit secretaries keep everything running smoothly. They take the orders physicians write and order them in the computer, take care of the charts, answer phones, and a lot of other stuff. We love our unit secretary! Days when she is sick usually are more chaotic.

4 - shift differential for the weekend is probably about 25 cents, which is what it is for CNA's, not very much, I know

5 - scrubs - you can wear navy or black pants. most of them wear scrub pants, but I don't think they have to be. some wear a matching scrub top but others just wear a white top. that's what I usually see but I think some of the long-term unit secretarys wear regular clothes. I think all 3 of ours wear navy scrub pants and either a navy or white top (usually just a solid tee shirt)

I don't know what you know about 9west, but it's a new unit that is eventually to be a telemetry (monitored) floor similar to my floor. They've been open about a month and because they don't have much staff (rely a lot on resource nurses) they have a max of I think 12 pt's on the floor, with 2 nurses and I think 2 CNAs. They'll be expanding to a lot more patients as their staff increases. Also, the monitor system isn't working yet so it's still a med-surg floor.

I'm also at st. john's & just a slight correction as I understand it from my friend who is working on 9 west now that they closed inpatient psych. It's intended to be a neuro step down floor.

As stated above the unit secretaries pretty much keep everything flowing. They are truly a VERY important person, especially on day shifts!!!!!

The SICU is where I am right now & they all wear royal blue scrubs so I'm thinking it might be unit specific? Would be a good question to ask in your interview.

Yes, the plan is for either 9west or 8west to be a neuro floor - particularly for the new stroke team. Dr. Anna (don't think I can list her full name here) wants all of her stroke pt's on telemetry but they haven't got equipment running yet.

As for the uniforms, only CNA's wear royal blue. If you wear royal blue as a unit secretary, everyone will constantly be coming to you to empty bedpans! :) They're pretty laid-back about what the US's wear so I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok, I am slightly confused because the HR lady said 9 west is a cardio/medical floor............ She also said I would be trained on the cardiac monitors...? SO how do you guys like working at st johns? Is it a good atmosphere? That's where I want to end up working when I get graduate and get my RN, so I figure this is a good stepping stone. Also, do they do anual raises or anything like that? Thanks for all the info!!

I am waiting on the new St. John's in BA to open up since it's close to me. Can someone tell me what the starting pay is for a CNA there?
