Nursing Students Ohio University

Published

This was just posted on the face book page OHio RN to BSN Forum

The Ohio Board of Nursing recently made changes to licensure requirements that included the mandatory addition of a clinical experience into Ohio University's curriculum. Due to this change, we have had to temporarily discontinue offering the RN to BSN completion program to residents outside of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Michigan, and West Virginia.Because of these changes, we will not be able to admit you to the RN-BSN program at this time. If we have made a mistake and you do reside in one of the above listed states, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can work with you to reopen your application.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused you and the delay in your education. A refun... d of your application fee will be sent to your home address in 8 to 10 weeks. Your application will be kept on file in the event that we are able to reopen the program to residents of your state.

If you have any future questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call our office.

It isn't the program - it is the individual states' BONs that are driving this. There is an article from the ANA that discusses what is going on. This isn't JUST OU - it is all distance programs with out of state students.

Interesting, I didn't see anything about clinicals in the article though.

Odd...I know at least 3 nurses who have done their RN to BSN with Western Governors and did NO clinicals. We are in Colorado.

I picked OHIO U. because of the 5 week increments with no deadline to finish at a certain time.

A coworker of mine just finished up with them this past summer. She had to do a clinical, I think 90 hours. If I remember correctly, she said it was something that ended up being required and she was fortunate to be able to do her clinical at work, in the activities dept. So she worked Mon,Tue, Wed, and did clinical hours Thurs, Fri. for several weeks. So I think this is something that has recently changed at Western Governors. I'm in CO too, up in Fort Collins.

I just remembered what happened, she was trying to set up hours for community, but she couldn't find any place that would accept her because they did not have a contract with . So she was freaking out at first, but then she was able to work something out with where we work.

That is determined by the BON in specific states. The boards are the ones that set the standards and decide whether or not a program is acceptable. Hopefully OU and all the other schools can come to an agreement with all the BONs. Another reason we need a national nursing licensing board rather then individual states. just my 2 cents ...

Maybe I am missing something, but if it is a RN to BSN program... the student already has a nursing license and therefore must have satisifed whatever requirements a given state has for licensure.

I am attending an out-of-state university for my BSN (already RN). No clinicals, per se, but there are requirements that I do things out in the community, and I believe students have to be working RNs (but I don't remember having to "prove" this).

So, what does the board of nursing have to do with requirements for the completion programs?

I don't pretend to understand it .... just posted what was written by the ANA. All of us that have graduated or will graduate are exempt. It will just affect those that won't be finished by 2014 - or maybe not at all if OU is able to reach an agreement with the BONs.

I spoke with the admissions office today concerning all this and inability to register for classes etc. They kept putting me on 'hold' etc. When the person came back that I spoke with she said 'yes' there are new rules as of 2 weeks ago, they don't know what is going to happen for people that are enrolled already and the nursing department is having a meeting tomorrow and in the interm no out of state people are being admitted to the program until they know what is going on and what is going to happen. Will keep you updated as they update me. i bowed out of 2 other programs to attend his school, now I might be very sorry i did...............

I am not going to react to this information until it has been confirmed one way or the other.

Having two nursing classes to go...it would do me no good at this point.

Reading up on RN to BSN Ohio Academic Outreach on Facebook. Someone stated it will NOT apply to those already enrolled.

However, it sounds like there will be a LAB/Project component to 4600 in the Spring!! Great...just great!!

I am taking it as it is at this point. It seems like some courses could be better, and some could be worse, and it will all average out at the end. I think that overall this is a good program. We just need to learn to navigate it successfully, and remain positive. Carolyn- I hope it works out in your case, you should be grandfathered in as well.

I was notified yesterday that I was NOT grandfathered in . Even though i was enrolled and accepted my transcripts were not evaluated until the end of october, never heard from an advisor nor received any info as to what nursing classes i should be taking etc, so was not enrolled in a nursing class for this semester because of little to no cotact from OU. Because of this, they said with the 'new' rules I cannot continue. To say the least that I am VERY upset and ****** is an understatement. Due to the incompetancy of OU, I turned down 2 other spots in other nursing programs to attend OU. Bye Bye BSN for at least another year. I am beyond upset.

So you essentially are kicked out after taking a class? That is BS. I'm so sorry.
