I have no idea how you can calculate the staffing without knowing how many patients 1 nurse gets? this is totally frustrating

There is no pt/nurse ratio considered in this calculation. That's why you calculate number of staff based on FTEs. By this calculation, technically, one nurse could take as many pts as required by the census. Of course, in reality, it's not safe.

I don't understand this at all...table 28.1 in the book has numbers in there for nurses etc. How can I answer the question "how may staff members are needed for one day on the unit" if I have no idea how many patients a nurse should take- do I just pick a number and base it on that? I'm obviously missing something here.

Box 28.1 is the one you use to CALCULATE the number of staff. Table 28.1 just gives you an example how to do skill mix, and it has nothing to do with calculating FTE stuff. If you totally understand Box 28.1, you will figure out the number of staff based on FTEs. Don't just pick a number. You can do it. :)

BTW, the assignment is not asking you how many pts a nurse should take, but asking you how many nursing personnel for one day based on 30 FTEs. Forget about the pts number.

But there should be only one correct answer for each calculation. Even if the TAs don't know how to do it, they have the answers. I am afraid we will still be dinged for the wrong answer(s). It's very sad. I just feel that it's very unfair for us to do this kind of assignment without being given adequate instruction. If this was an in-classroom program, we would have been received more information.

I agree with you 100%. I have felt that way thru most of this class. If we were in a physical classroom these ambiguous assignments would have been better explained and if not we would be able to collaborate in class time. My TA has been less than helpful and even when I email the actual instructor less than helpful. I cant wait to fill out the course evaluation...but I wonder do they even care??? We have a little more then 7 days left in this class. And next weeks assignment is just a vague. Hang in there everyone we are almost done.

and did I mention I HATE this text book. For the FTE assignment I went to our hospital library and retrieved 2 other textbooks which are organized much better and the explanations much more straigh forward.

I don't think they care. The TA are so stringy with words. Their replies are usually a few words. It sounds like either they don't want to talk or they don't know how to talk. I'm reading week 5 content "communication", and thinking our TAs, I just want to laugh. What an irony!

I am not good at ambiguity and therefore this class has been very trying for me, at least it is almost over. This out of ALL classes should be the most structured as it is all about LEADERSHIP, from what I can tell about the leadership in THIS course, maybe they should take a refresher course on leadership to actually be able to teach THIS course!

I disagree with using box 28.1 to figure out staffing using the given FTE number in the assignment. This calculation tells you how many FTEs are required. Being that the FTE number is given to us in the assignment, this formula does nothing to help determine person shifts. I do agree that the final staffing numbers do NOT support the average daily census but that is irrelevant to the assignment.

I wish I could show my work, which would explain better. But I know I can't. :( We will see how we do when the grades come back next week.

So frustrated. :( I do really well in all of my classes through this program and now have an 88 in this one. With the submission of this paper I'm afraid I'm not going to pass. This paper was so unfair and ridiculously confusing. I am usually one to pick up pretty quickly on things, especially of a mathematical nature and this was just not explained AT ALL. I am so mad but finally just said screw it and turned it in. Did the best I could.

Added: I didn't ask questions which is my fault, but when looking at other students Q&A, seeing her responses I can tell she is so less than helpful. GRR!
