Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

chuckster, I think this is a great idea. I will gladly provide information as I progress. I have applied to the program to begin March 28. I am currently waiting for a transcript review, official acceptance notification and finally enrollment. I'll keep you posted when I hear more.

Great idea to start a thread dedicated to OU RN to BSN program. Like I stated in my previous post, I've been accepted to the program but have delayed starting because I'm getting all my general ed requirements out the way so I can totally focus on the five week nursing courses.

My experience thus far has been very good. I received transfer credits for all my ASN credits and just have four general education requirements remaining. I'm hoping to start sometime in July/August.

My cousin and a former classmate both have already started the program and love it!!! The courses are demanding (weekly posts, papers, some have quizzes and projects) but when you think about completing a course in five weeks, it's worth the sweat and tears!

I will post more information as they share with me.

Hi Chuckster, msteelhorse, and nevergonnagiveup! What a great idea! I just completed my application and all my transcript requests. Im shooting for fall enrollment (Sept 6), so there's plenty of time. I will keep you all posted on the progression of my enrollment process. Im figuring I will need 16 classes to complete my BSN according to the syllabus....that's 2 classes less than other colleges I've applied to. It will be interesting to see.....

Hey nervergonnagiveup - you said that:

My cousin and a former classmate both have already started the program . . .
What's the chance that you can convince them to post here about their experiences with OU? It would be a great help.

I wish I could get one of them to come on here and post their experience with OU but unfortunately both have extremely busy lives especially my cousin who just graduated RN school and hasn't even taken her boards yet (OU allowed her to start the program although she is a LPN. They have informed her she has to pass her boards and be licensed before the capstone course can be completed).

So in addition to taking courses at OU she is studying for her NCLEX and working three jobs. Quite a busy woman but doing well in OU's program!

I've looked at OU's program online and I'm still trying to decide if a totally online program would work for me. The cost is great, but totally online scares me for some reason. I am glad that OU is a brick and mortar school as well with a traditional RN program though. I'm sending for information now. My only problem is financial aid. I qualify for state grants and I don't know if they would apply to an out of state school. Also sending transcripts from all the schools that I've been to over the years is expensive LOL. I just sent them all to Spalding University and McKendree University.

I look forward to reading everyone's experiences. Like I said, something about a totally online program scares me even though I'm on the computer a lot.

I understand your trepidation regarding a completely online program. Over the course of 3 degrees, I've done a handful of courses (both grad and undergrad) this way, but never an entire program. The online courses have not been particularly difficult to handle but they do require more self-discipline than does a traditional classroom course.

And I'm sympathetic to your complaint of having to send a large number of transcripts. I've taken classes at 11 colleges, so it's a tedious and costly affair for me as well.

I am also thinking about the gas cost. One program is in Louisville which is about a 40 mile drive, the other is in my hometown. However, we are supposed to being moving to Louisville whenever my SIL finally moves out of her trailer. I'd like to start either program before that because honestly, she was supposed to have moved last year lol. I've sent for information from Ohio University. I have also been seriously considering also going for my MSN and the Louisville school has one MSN course as part of the BSN program.

Why does one school charge $4-5 for a transcript and others charge $10. University of Phoenix didn't charge me anything and sent them electronically to both schools I wanted them sent too.

I don't know why the cost of transcripts varies so much. But I do know that many of the private-for-profit schools like UOP take care of the cost of obtaining transcripts; and for what they charge overall they should! In the larger scope it's a relatively small expense.
