Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

So, I just talked to OU online chat and asked if I had to have a pre req before taking statistics and she stated "No". So I know I will have to take statistics..Has anyone taken this class through them for the 5 week course? How hard is it? Should I take it alone? What is the introductory nursing class like? Thanks in advance!!

I know how you feel about wanting to get started. I took nutrition as part of my ADN so did not need it. I suspect you'll need another English besides comp. You need a Jr level course. I did not have to take any more. I will try to send you a private msg. Check to see and reply to me there...

LindseyRN86, I just cleaned out my inbox. Try again! Sorry about that....

mtsteelhorse-

Somehow I am unable to PM you. I need 15 of something before I can...But thank-you for all of the info that you sent me I will def keep those into consideration. How are you liking the program thus far? Is it what you expected? Congratulations you are almost done!!!:yeah:

Hey, I think you need to have 15 posts or so before you can PM. It doesn't take long. I like the program...I complain plenty, lol! but we all do at times. Once you get rolling it's pretty straight forward. I LOVE the 5 week format. I had no idea what to expect when I started, but it's been fine. You'll have lots of resources here on this forum. I don't feel like I'm almost done, but it does go by quickly. Best of luck to you!

I took Nutrition, Stats, Junior English, and Music all online at OU.

For nutrition, you have to basically do a summary of what you've eaten over a 3 day period on Cengage (an online program that you have to do w/the class). Then you have another assignment regarding the findings from the 3 day food log. You really have to screw up not to get a 100 on both of these. You also have weekly discussions that the professor post. No reference or APA format required. Also just have to respond to 1 classmate. Once again easy 5 points for each week. Now here is where I screwed up. You have a mid term and a comprehensive final. INSTEAD OF JUST FOCUSING ON THE STUDY GUIDES FOR EACH CHAPTER, I did the Cengage quizzes for the midterm. HUGE MISTAKE. I bombed the mid-term b/c of this. Just basically memorize the matching and sample questions from each study guide and you'll pass this class w/high marks.

Stats is BRUTAL, but doable. Just don't let yourself fall behind. Watch every YOUTUBE video, join every STATS forum, and ask folks on this board for help. I "think" they curve the midterm and final BIG TIME (I basically left 1.5 pages blank and still got a B+), so don't stress out too much.

Bus. Comm w/ Prof P has been by far my BEST and FAVORITE class at OU. Wish every class was like that one. Everything we wrote about was so relevant. Was actually sad when the class ended.

And MUSIC w/ Pro B is hands down the EASIEST A you will probably get at OU if you need to take an ARTS class.

Good Luck!!

Deltaroxxy-

Thank you for all of the valuable information you posted!! Thanks for taking the time to help a person out :) Sounds like stats will be taken all alone this summer. I have a really smart friend that is going to be applying to med school and she said she would tutor me and that she would use those hours as community service or something so it works out for both of us  Yes, I am sure I will need an art class so that is perfect!! Thanks!! Hey did you have to take a calc or algebra class before taking stats?

Delta I will be doing these as well. So bummed that I cannot do the stats at rio salado, thanks to their algebra prereq....so stupid. Maybe I can consider doubling up with with a music class and nutrition becasue they don't sound too bad!

Michelemybell-

Where will you be taking your stats? Do you know if we have to have a math pre req? Thanks in advance :)

Not for OU. There is an 8 week online class at rio that is supposed to be much more tolerable but they require th.e prereq.

Yes...Music and Nutrition isn't a bad combo. For music you do the practice quizzes, then you've basically "taken the REAL quiz". The listening part can be a bit challenging is your ear isn't accustomed to classical music, but just fluff your way through the terminology and you'll be fine.

Another question for all the multi-class takers....how do you prepare for quizzes for 2 or 3 classes at a time??????
