Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

My TA nitpicked everything I did in this class. Every week I had at least 2 refereed citations in my post and another one in my responses. It was just harder for me for some reason.

Intervention was a breeze, as was diversity. Family nursing had a lot of busy work, but it was not a difficult class.

Do you remember what your TA nitpicked about? My family nursing TA seemed to like everything I did...100% on all assignments and posts. But, in transitions (300) which I took at the same time, I also got nitpicked on citations. A half point could be a large percentage. I got a better average in Family even with those awful tests!

One nitpick was for not indenting my citation. Sometimes when you go to transfer from word document it will not hold the original formatting and will not allow you to change it. So, I would add a note after citations that I could not indent when I needed to so I wouldn't get dinged.

Anyone have any idea if a humanities course will cover the fine arts requirement? This is the description for the course I took. It was a 20th century humanities course. I don't know, I think it could but thought those of you who have been through the DARS process may have a better idea?

HUMANITIES - TWENTIETH CENTURY

Integrated examination of dominant ideas in Western culture expressed in art, literature, music, philosophy and religion. Covers period from turn of century to present. Focuses on creative forces which have shaped contemporary consciousness from pioneering work of Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky and Wright through dominance of objective consciousness to newly emerging guiding myths of today.

Sorry, one more question regarding math. To meet the requirements, do you we have to take a math class then? I never took College Algebra, but had to take 2 prep classes to get me at the college level since I tested low. I know some math is a prereq for statistics, but if I take it through Rio Salado, their pre-req requirement is for Introductory algebra. Which I'd rather take than taking College Algebra if possible.

Hey, hey!

I applied in early December and finally got acceptance. I'm currently STILL weighing the pros and cons between this school and a local state school that I've been accepted to (OU is cheaper and faster-so it's my preference).

I ended up taking a job with a federal hospital that is stringent with their accreditation requirements. The fed website lists all of the OU extension sites that are accredited, and eCampus is not listed. I know the majority of people who read this thread are currently students, but does anyone know if after you graduate your transcripts or degree say eCampus at all? Or do your transcripts/degree just say Ohio University? My employer requires us to turn in transcripts, and if any site that is not on the fed list is on my transcript, the degree won't be accepted.

I don't want to go through all of the work required to not have my employer accept it.

Thanks so much!

^^^^ Great question….I would assume it would simply say Ohio U, but your best bet would be to give the school of nursing (admissions) a quick call to verify.

My DARS came back and it was as expected. I need junior English and Statistics besides the nursing classes. They gave me credit for Human Development for an old psych class I took ages ago that did not qualify at my local University. So, I took Human Development again at my local University this past fall and have not yet submitted the transcripts to OU. But Ohio already gave me credit for taking it. Oh well. I am pleased with my DAR results.

Just completed my application and sent my transcripts over. Glad to see AllNurses has a website for this school.

Thats encouraging to hear. Curious, when did you start the program? Just to get an idea how long it took for you to get your DARS? My classes are listed, but have not had any review done on them yet... at least not that has been posted. But I haven't even started yet so I know that is to be expected.

Good luck. When are you trying to start? I didn't think it was too bad for me from applying to acceptance. I applied mid October, and got my acceptance a couple weeks ago, a good month before I planned to start. I had only called once to follow up, but recieved a response back within 2 days.

I just started the beginning of January...the winter quarter. So, it was fast.

Hoping to start Fall 12. Advisor stated that I should likely hear back by the end of July. Where do you purchase your text books? Any good sources that are well priced? Excited to be heading back to school!
