Is anyone taking this course ?

I'm going to take this course during Spring 3rd session.

I'm taking 2 pre req courses at Cincinnati State (semester version) which are way easy, and I feel like I can fit another one in. Just wondering how much work this one is.

I would tend to agree. Time is a huge investment in this class. I would have to say I commit 25-30 hours per week. The DB assignments are not simple 5 paragraph explanations. They are in fact, lengthy 2-3 page papers, often with 8-10 references. The material is interesting and the readings are not difficult. I too, would expect an A in the class, but I feel like I certainly put in a lot of work for that A. It seems as though there has been a dramatic number of people who were doing poorly, so the instructor added a bonus test at the end. That should help most people I would imagine. Hopefully, some of the wrinkles will be ironed out for the next session.

nessa74 i feel like they are extremely hard on grading and no matter if i spend 5 hours or 30 minutes i still get like a 50-60% on the discussion boards the tests are the only thing giving me a halfway descent grade.

I have never done so poorly on anything tht I have done. I spent 14 hours on one DB, I had 12 references and I got a 65%. I am beside myself. Some of the comments the "facilitator" is writing make no sense to me. She wants me to "add additional information to explain the quotes" but I did add it, and she still took off because it wasn't enough. I have 2 days to read, understand, research, synthesize, and write a paper. Really! This is ridiculous. At this point it looks like I will be lucky to even pass. The thing is, I'm taking my Freshman Comosition class this semester too, and I have a 98% average. I can't be that poor of a writer.

I really hate this class.

Hugs! It's tough. I am going to copy and paste my response to your other post below (in case you missed it). I'd also like to add that maybe instead of spending so much time researching and finding references, you could try just writing out your thoughts and using 3 or 4 references. That way you can focus on what you're reading and spend more time really comprehending and explaining each reference.

Here is my copy and paste:

Honestly, I just did the best I could. I tried not to hyperfocus and spend too much time on any one detail. I copied the questions or rubric into a document and typed out my answers below. Then I went back and added fluff and smoothed out transitions as need.

Also, don't make it harder on yourself by trying to do completely new topics/cultures for ever discussion post/assignment!! Use the resources you've already found. I wrote about India in almost all of my DBP and assignments. I also wrote about malaria and vaccinations for many of the assignments. The instructor even encouraged us to do that. By the end I had a folder of journal articles and quotes from the book that I was able to use. Also, when looking for posts to respond to, find some with similar topics and, again, use the resources you already have. For the first 2 weeks I spent HOURS on the discussion posts. The last 2 weeks I was able to write them in about 30 minutes or so. I realized I was spending most of my time trying to find articles and quotes and not enough time on just writing the post. Finally, the WHO is your best friend. As is the World Life Expectancy website she links to in the Global Health Systems report.

Also, I was a pretty solid B before the extra credit opportunity (Good grades on quizzes, not great grades on discussion posts, though I did manage a 95 on 2 posts!). And I would have happily taken that B. I actually liked this class (waaaaaaay more than I like diversity (4570). I learned way more about culture and diversity in that class than I am right now in 4570, which feels like useless busy work). I especially liked the videos she had us watch.

Feel free to send me a message if you have any other questions!

I've had several emails back and forth with the professor. I think she is listening. She said they are considering some changes for next time, especially lightening the workload. They are not backing down on APA and the emphasis on writing skills. She said too many students are just copying and pasting and citing it and calling it done. But it is the only time a professor has responded to my emails, so I think that is to her credit. I'm just tired of staying up till 2am to get the work done. 2 weeks to go.

Taking week four test in a few minutes and then ONE WEEK to GO!!!!

It is a short week though because assignments have to be in early. But I am so glad to be rounding for home, I can almost do the happy dance! Just wait till this time next week......:D

I just want this to be over... I'm sick of writing.. 1 paper and 4 responses (mini papers) a test and will be done.

This class sounds crazy! I was planning on taking it during summer with 4600 but I think I'll just take Cultural Anthropology at one of the online CC's.

Stick a fork in me and call me done!!!!!!!! Throwing out the lowest DB grade and the extra credit exam really boosted my grade. But I am so glad to be done with this class. Clearly the hardest and most stressful class I've taken so far at OU.

Have a good summer those of you who are taking time off. I'm taking 3 classes this summer, so only get a 2 week break, but I'm gonna take it and enjoy it.

So glad you made it through! I've been thinking about you! Yay!

The course evaluation finally showed up in my email today. The last question was "What did you learn from this class?", (or something to that effect) and I said,

I learned to be completely stressed and overwhelmed about a class, to feel inadequate and a failure, and to complain liberally to all family and firends. I was the worst class I have taken at OU to date.

Sad but true. I couldn't wait for this class to be over.

Thank God you are done with this class. I was reading about others experiences last quarter and it sounded horrendous. You can be proud you made it through. Glad I did not have to endure this one!!
