YOU MIGHT BE FROM OHIO IF......

You've had to switch from AC to heat, in the same day.

You end your sentences with unnecessary prepositions, such as:

"Where's my coat at?"

You install security lights on you home and garage, but leave them unlocked.

You think the 4 food groups are, beef, pork, beer and Jell-O salad.

You know what "pop" is.

You have designed you kids Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

Your idea of sexy lingerie is tube socks and a flannel nightgown.

The local newspaper covers headline news in two pages, but uses 6 pages for sports.

You think all pro football teams are supposed to wear orange.

You know Ohio's 4 seasons: Winter, Still Winter, Almost Winter & Construction.

You know what a Buckeye is, and have a recipe for candy ones too.

Your sense of direction, "toward the Lake" is the same as North, and "toward the river" is South.

You can tell if someone is from northern or southern Ohio as soon as they open their mouth.

You can spell words like: olentangy, cuyahoga, tuscarawas and wapakoneta.

"Vacation" to you means Cedar Point if it's summer, and deer hunting in the fall.

You measure distance in minutes.

Your school was closed due to cold.

Your school was closed due to heat.

And finally, you might be from ohio if:

you pronounce it "oh-hi-ya" and not "oh-hi-o"

I sure could identify with most of these. I have so many relatives in Ohio and we visit on a regular basis. The older folks like me slip back and forth into talking styles that work with whatever group we are with. The kids, especially the teenagers are having problems understanding us! I have some grandsons coming in for spring break, they are bringing friends with them, I understand they have told these friends they will interpert the language if they need help. LOL. :nurse:

Hi all Im from Cincinnati and have lived here most of my life excpet for the last 5 years i spent in columbus in college! I just moved back to the good ol nati' and lovin it!

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in! CHILI SPAGHETTI is my favorite thing in the whole wide world! LOL. I also grew up saying "please" when I didnt hear something, until I got to college I did not know this wasnt universal!

Although I dont go deer hunting or say warsh instead of wash I got a huge kick out of your post mike!:) Oh and I say POP! soda sounds like its from the 50's! I will never understand people in the south calling everything Coke? Sprite is not Coke, Dr PEpper is Dr Pepper not Coke! LOL

These are great! I, myself, am a Buckeye...transplanted here in WV, but a Buckeye still the same! I was born and raised there...lived the first 23 yrs. of my life there and I STILL say pop! Not ever going to change! I am from Northern Ohio, though, so I would say that the one about pronouncing it O-hi-ya instead of O-hi-o is switched around for those of us "near the Lake!" We say O-hi-O!! And love those Ohio winters...love that Lake effect snow!! :uhoh21: Great post Mike!! :)

Mike

that was really a good one

:balloons:

Dear Mike,

Please add "CREK" for "CREEK" and no Ohioan would ever say "YA'ALL"--I know I say it all the time and people give me STRANGE looks...... :p

I loved it! Thanks for the laugh!! :rotfl:

These are hysterical! I lived in Shaker Hts/Cle Hts area for 4 1/2 yrs in the mid '90's.....and the preposition thing is sooo true....and drives me bananas! It's the same in Illinois, though...people ending sentences with prepositions.

And the pop thing is true, too, as is the going from AC to heat in a 24 hr time period!

And I've only heard of people pronouncing it "Oh-HI-oh"....having been a Clevelander for a few years.

Oh, Ohio......

ERNURSEOH I know what you mean. The way someone says a word is almost as much fun to hear, sort of, as the actual word itself.

A small stream is a creek, but sounds like CRICK, or CREK.

A local highway is ROUTE 40 for example, but many say ROOT 40.

And our congressman does not work in WASHINGTON, so says some people.

He works in WARSHINGTON!!

I know there's tons more.

By the way, never lived in the Queen City, but I LOVE CHILI & SPAGEHETI (sp?). Not regular Texas type red chili, but the kind with Coco and Cinn. spices in it. Add bean, onions and sharp cheddar!! Yummmmmmmmm

When I was 10 I moved from Dayton to Adams County. That was an education. I couldn't fiqure out what they were talking about when they were saying "tobaca". I had to ask. It's tobacco that they raise down there. My sister lives in Flordia and she says soda. The saying goes for weather in Ohio, "If you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes!" Yesterday it went from heat index of 109 to 75 in two hours. Got to love it! :) Coming to Columbus 4 years ago was a very intersting thing. It was like the beverly hillbillies goes to Dublin. Here we were in the middle of the golf tourmanent where Tiger Woods plays and we are trying to get our U-Haul truck parked. Never again, but I have to laugh about it till this day.

I am from the Akron area originally, now transplanted to Central Texas. Hubby's in the military, but I can't wait to move back home, "where my heart's at":)

This thread has made me homesick....

PS, I still say Pop, too, drives my daughter crazy!

Your kidding right?

Not everybody drinks pop with their meal of chili plopped on 'sketti'?

I have to ask where my coat is AT and if you didn't hear me ask the question then 'please?' is the way to have me repeat myself. Say 'excuse me' and I'll let you walk past or wonder if you belched.

Now, if you don't quit making fun of buckeye people, then I promise I'll have to bring green bean casserole to our next gathering.

that is quite a funny post...i am originally from caldwell, ohio and now live in south dakota thanks to my husbands air force job. yuck!!!!!! anyway i can't decide if after i graduate if i want to return to ohio, but all these things make me remember why i miss it so much. especially my family :crying2: thanks for the funny post :chuckle
