What's the deal with Columbus State admission?

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

My friend applied in January 2009 for their traditional ADN program and was accepted (as all students are) and was told her start date was March 2011. In the meantime, she applied twice to their online program and was rejected.

Their website states for application dates...

Traditional Track

  • Jan. 6-15, 2010 for the Autumn 2010 class
  • July 1-9, 2010 for the Spring 2011 class
  • Jan. 10-19, 2011 for the Autumn 2011 class

I called the school and asked: "So, If I apply during the July 2010 application period and meet all the requirements, I'll definitely get to start in March of 2011?" Their answer? YES OF COURSE YOU WILL!

Is the waitlist gone at CSCC or is the nursing school misleading me? I don't want to hold out and stay in Columbus an extra year only to be disappointed and realize I could have started at Tri-C sooner after all.

Also, what is the deal with CSCC requiring the anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and biology sections for the Hesi A2 exam?!

They require organic/biochem as a prerequisite, but a lot of the chemistry seems to be stuff covered in general chemistry (nuclear chem, molar relationships, stoichiometry, etc). Additionally, biology isn't a prerequisite in any way, shape, or form. Anatomy and physiology are taken during the nursing program and are not requirements. The Hesi review book states: "A one-year course in anatomy and physiology should be taken before the student prepares for the anatomy examination." Yet, CSCC expects us to rock that section BEFORE taking any form of A&P. What is up with all that?! Luckily I've taken biology and general chemistry for science majors and I've taken anatomy (not physiology) so I'm a bit better off, but that seems really unfair. Additionally, I took anatomy twice (As both times) and both were high level with human cadavers taught by medical school faculty and there is a lot of anatomy stuff in the review book I never learned. Needless to say, I'm frustrated and worried.

Thoughts?

So the CSCC application was different than I thought. I logged in and just kept hitting refresh. It let me in and popped up with a page showing my cougar ID, name, address, and phone #. It then asked me if I was a LPN or CSCC grad of respiratory therapy or surg tech. Then asked me if I was a tech prep student or with the OhioHealth GRAD program. Then I hit submit. After I hit submit, it just pops up and says YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED. No confirmation # or telling u what # you are to submit. Gee whiz I sure hope they got it. When I log in again, it just starts the process all over again.

I know, I applied at 9am this morning and it was exactly as you said. Kind of scary. Wish they would have at least sent a confirmation email.

I AM so hoping I get into March 2011... they said only 20 seats or so left. I had my application submitted at 9:00:04 so FINGERS CROSSED :) I hate that they make us wait til the end of Oct to find out :(

Wow. That's a long wait. Did they put that in the info for this application period? I know that I heard mid-March for my mid-January application this year.

I would expect that there will be more spaces that open up. Some people who received the March 2011 start may well find somewhere else to go in the meantime.

I certainly hope so!! I called the nursing program today and they told me October. They said probably 3.5 to 4 months or so and I took that to mean late October. Hopefully they are over estimating so students don't call if they fall behind. Pretty sure I'll be checking my mail every day from now until the letter comes! It must be more complicated than I thought to run down a list and place people in the next available spot. I just really really really really really don't want to wait until September 2011... Less than one year til I start sounds so much better! :nurse:

I don't think they even start the review process until the application period closes. I don't know if it's complicated, but my understanding is that they rereview most everything. They check your NET or HESI scores and confirm those as well as confirming all of your pre-reqs, etc. And, I think that the admin side of their nursing department is fairly small and they're also getting ready for this fall's class.

I do know at least one person who received an offer to start March 11 who chose to go elsewhere.

That's a good sign - one more spot for me :) Duno why you would do that though - I love the way columbus state's program is set up.

Luckily I don't have anything to worry about. I got As in NURC 101/102, CHEM 113, and PSYCH 100. I have transfer credit for stats and calc and I have a year of English from my bachelors degree and I got a 90% on the Hesi.

If I got the March 2011 start date, when would I have to take the background test? How much does it cost and where do you do it?

Jumping into the conversation again- I've been away for a couple days.

When I got my orientation packet: in it, it had all the info for background check, drug screen, etc. I had to redo some of my medical stuff since it had been submitted for NURC over a year ago...

Drug testing is $32

Background check is $22 or if you haven't lived in Ohio for 5 years an additional $24. And they just take your fingerprints to run them.

So I got a little lost...Is anyone on here like me; waiting for response from the July 1st application? I've heard anything from 4-6 weeks to months later to learn if I have a seat for the spring start.

I am waiting. I applied July 1 at 9:00:04am so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I get one of the few seats left in the March 2011 starting class as I really don't want to wait until September 2011 to start.

When I called the nursing department, they told me we should hear in October. The turnaround time last application period was about 2.5 months so I'm hoping for mid-September.

Hi, foreverLaur. Don't mean to butt in, but was trying to find information for the HESI exam for CSCC and i'm interested in some perspectives of people who've taken it.

I had several classes from high school and college accepted when i applied to CSCC (2nd career). My only requirements before applying for the Autumn, 2011 nursing program were taking Chem 100, which i'm taking now, with Chem 113 and the (2) accelerated NURC classes in the fall. And passing the HESI exam.

The anatomy/physiology and biology portions of the HESI seem pretty intense. For me, that was from high school many moons ago. The exam review book is pretty tame for the English and math, but the sciences are just the opposite. Way more involved than I had expected (background's in architecture so my natural sciences are pretty rusty).

Was just wondering what your perspective on the exam was, e.g., if you had a science background, used any other study materials, how long it took, etc..

How are you taking NURC 101 & 102 in the fall? NURC 101 is a prerequisite to NURC 102...

I thought the Hesi A2 was very easy. My degree is in psychology. When I took the Hesi A2, I had taken Anatomy about a year ago, Biology about 7 years ago, general chemistry 4 years ago, and CHEM 113 about a year ago. I had never taken physiology. You need a cumulative 75% on the Hesi A2 which means you can BOMB the sciences and make up for it in the other sections. I got an 88% in A&P/Bio and an 80% in Chem. I got a 100% in reading comprehension/math and a 98% in vocab/grammar. I bought the official study guide and studied it for maybe a 2 or 3 hours over a week period or so... I essentially winged it. All you really need to review is basic math (a lot of adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing fractions/decimals) and you don't have a calculator so you have to do it all by hand. You also need to know household conversions and roman numerals but the study guide does a great job of preparing you for that. Reading comprehension/vocab/grammar was easier than the ACT/SAT I thought... probably at an 8th or 9th grade level or so.

Most of the anatomy I remembered from my class and the physiology I just winged. Biology and chemistry I relearned from the study guide and it obviously did an okay job :). Might not hurt to throw in a med term class though - it'll help on numerous portions of the test and in nursing school.

How are you taking NURC 101 & 102 in the fall? NURC 101 is a prerequisite to NURC 102...

Some of the NURC classes are accelerated, so (2) can be taken in one quarter (one the 1st half of the quarter, the next class the 2nd half).

I knew the HESI was a cumulative 75% score or better, which will help. But i'll definitely need to clean the cobwebs out of my skull for the sciences. Thanks for the insight!
