UC Accelerated BSN

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hello all! I just wanted to see if there are any soon-to-be accelerated students out there. I'm starting the BSN/MSN program at the University of CIncinnati in January and can't wait! I was hoping to get in touch with anyone who has been/is currently/is about to be going through this program. Hope to hear back!

Attrition rate has been a total of 3 of the 28 we started with. Studying the worst quarter is four and then three is close behind (some have said four is easier than three but we had a hard teacher for a course that was traditionally really easy). The first few quarters can be challenging as you become familiar with the nursing process, and nclex questions meaning you may be studying three hours some days and little others it really is individual though i have classmates that have studied less than that. To help with that I would purchase a Nclex review book ASAP after entering the program and start reviewing practice questions for whatever section you are on. It will definetly help!

Let me know if you have other questions

Sam- you should consider enrolling at Cincinnati State (www.cincinnatistate.edu)- they have many of the prerequisites available and are less expensive than other options! Many of the courses are available online. However, you have to be on the ball about signing up for them because they fill up fast and we (non-degree-seeking students) have lowest priority. Hope this helps! :)

I'm looking into the Accelerated MSN program, and some of the prerequisite courses they're asking for (e.g., A&P 3, Nutrition and Disease) don't even seem to exist where I live (Houston). Arrr!

Do you know where I could get these prerequisites done?

Contact the UC Graduate accel pathway adviser. I'm away from home right now, so I don't have the name of the college/university in Michigan that offers a N&D course online. It is very doable, according to one of my UC accel pathway cohort classmates (from a few years ago).

Check out your local colleges - the course may not be named "Nutrition & Disease", but as long as it covers the required material, it should be just fine for UC.

If your local college covers the entire A&P coursework in 2 classes, you may not need to take an A&P 3 class. The adviser will likely need to see the syllabus from your A&P classes to decide this.

Good luck!

Does anyone know how the transition from phase 2 to 3 works? Is it possible to be accepted into the accelerated program and not move on to the third phase for the speciality that you choose?

Thanks

YES, it is possible to complete the accel BSN phase 2 part of the program without being accepted to the phase 3 program of your choice. Welcome to reality!

That being said, if you are interested in nurse anesthetist for phase 3, you're pretty well guaranteed an interview for UC's CRNA program. If you think about it, this is a solid bonus, compared to the random "outsider" person applying to UC's CRNA program.

does anyone know if hondros adn would be able to get me accepted into the rn to bsn program at uc?

Hello all!

I have recently applied to UC's accelerated BSN program and am waiting to hear back. In the mean time, I was hoping that all of you who have been through the program could send some words of wisdom my way. Specifically, the "survival guide" that has been mentioned and CrufflerJJ's blog website, if at all possible to get a feel as to what the program is like. Thanks for all of the information already, this post is wonderful!

Hello

I am not sure I am posting on the right thread but I need some urgent help or advice.

Here is my situation - I am 41 years old and this is obviously a second career for me. I am currently on unemployment and we can pay our bills plus save. However, I think I could be getting a total of 79 weeks and will need to cmplete a degree fast. I do not have a previous BSN or BA, so bridge programs are out of the question. I am currently enrolled in Cincinnati State's Nrsing program and will hit the waiting list my next quarter -06/20/11. My current GPA is 4.0 - I am taking full load of classes in an effort to make this ordeal run as short as possible.

Can anybody point me in the right direction as to what I should do and which program will be most flexible/fast to utilize my time on the waiting list wisely and take classes towards a BSN?

Most of the 12 months or less BSN programs are designed for when you already have a ADN degree? Or am I missing any? I do not wish to go strictly into a BSN program as I am afraid I will still have 3 years to go and the idea of having summer breaks while time is trickling away...is just going to be nerve-wrecking.

I could work as a STNA after I take the class next month but that will be a strain on our budget and unnecessary stress; also, I do not want to jeopardize my availability to study or schedule once I start clinicals...

Any feedback/advice will be highly appreciated. I have learnt a lot from this helpful website.

Thank you

DIV-99,

It will be nearly impossible for you to get a BSN from start to finish in less than 3 years, the UC RN to BSN program is one year minimum AFTER you have an RN license, which is pretty much a two year process in itself.

Even in 3 years, that's fast for a BS degree, which is of course usually a 4 year program.

On top of that, UC is both notoriously bureaucratic and expensive. On top of THAT, they are transitioning from quarters to semesters in 2012. It's a really bad time to be trying to fast-track through this university. Trust me.

Honestly, it would be less stress on you and your family if you focused right now on just becoming an RN and making sure that you like it, and then try to get a part-time RN job and do the BSN bridge part-time out in Blue Ash. It's 2 years, but you'll be working.

I am in the Accelerated BSN/MSN program at UC right now.

Marshal,

Thank you for your reply. I agree with you about UC; when I checked with them, they seemed still very confused about the transfer to semesters and did not have their curriculum straightened out. Plus, it would have been 3 years after a stupid class I had to take and they offer only once a year.

So, I am working on getting into Wright State's program - it is comparable price wise. However, the whole first year of the 4-yr BSN degree is comprised of prereqs - I am taking 18 credit hours right now in an attempt to get it all done before their dead line for applying of 06/30/11. If I can get in thier fall track staring this September, I will be out with a BSN in Dec 2013 - it is exactly 2 years and a semester. The reason - it is notn stop - you do not take a summer break like Miami or UC; the first yr is in quarters, the second yr and sem is in semesters.

If I stay at Cincinnati State - I would hopefully graduate several months after Dec 2013 but with a ADN - because of the switch ot semesters, they are skipping the clinicals rotation in Feb 2012...

So, I hope I can survive - it is very hard to keep with 18 cr h and maintain my 4.0 GPA. I am just running out of time to sleep/study and I am going crazy LOL.

I have 3 more wks left.

Good luck in you MSN - I have heard only nice things about their accelerated track.

I am starting Phase II of this program January 2012. Would you be able to point me in the direction of CrufflerJJ's blog? I've seen several references to it and would definitely love to read it!

Thanks!
