OSU Medical Center - Nurse A/B

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Is there anyone familiar with University Hospital and what the difference between Staff Nurse A and Staff Nurse B job listings are, other than minimum pay? I am considering moving back to Ohio and putting in some apps there, but am unsure what the distinction between the two is.

Thanks for any assistance!

Associate degrees versus bachelor's degree

Not trying to sharp shoot, but is that a guess? I ask because if A was just for ADNs, then wouldn't it specify that in the job description and the same with B having a BSN as a requirement?

I have been a part of OSU for the better part of 5 years now so my response is based on direct knowledge, not a random guess. Staff Nurse-A is a nurse with an associate degree and Staff Nurse-B is a nurse with a bachelors degree. The degrees must be in nursing specifically. I was hired as a Staff Nurse-A and when I finished my BSN, I was changed to a Staff Nurse-B. I'm not sure how much relavance it really has for hiring... especially since they are primarily only hiring BSN nurses. I am fairly certain they will hire a BSN nurse for either A or B posting... your job title and pay would just reflect under a Staff Nurse-B.

You can view the union contract at this link - towards the end it details the pay for each category and years of experience.

Hi LauRN,

Appreciate all your info regarding OSU. Are they on a hiring freeze right now? It doesnt look like they are based on the amount of job postings on the OSU website.

They were "frozen" about a year ago, and they were still hiring. I think their definition of a hiring freeze is limiting hiring, but not stopping it. If there is a job posting, there is an opening. Especially with the new James Cancer Hospital opening a few months ago, there is a big need! OSU only reviews you for the job you specifically apply for, so if you are interested in 30 jobs, then submit 30 applications!

Ah I see. Yea that place looks amazing! I think I might get some experience first at the Cleveland Clinic and then apply down there.
