Kent State University Accelerated BSN Spring 2013

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hello, I applied for Kent State University's Accelerated BSN program, Spring 2013 corhort. My intentions with this post is to start a dialog with others who have also applied for the ABSN Spring 2013 cohort at KSU, if this is you I would love to hear from you.

I also welcome any input from others who have or are currently in KSU's ABSN program.

Thank You,

Eric

It ishard to say because I tend to think that every semester may be different (e.g.how many applicants and how you compare to those applicants). I got all the prerequisitesdone and all but one blue course finished. It is my guess that having justabout everything done that I could have done before getting into the programwas helpful. Since I had little control over my GPA at the point when I decidedto pursue the BSN, I made sure to shine on everything that I could control suchas earning an A in every class that I have taken since starting back to school, getting experience, doing as good of job as I could on my resume, personal statement, and interview. The four science prerequisites are weighted prettyheavy so you definitely want to ace them. I also took it upon myself to get allmy immunizations and CPR certification and then stating that fact in mypersonal statement. Basically the best advice I can give you is to do the bestyou can on everything you can control.

I wishyou well, I know it is a hard and seemingly long wait going through the process of applying and waiting to hear if you have been accepted. Feel free to ask anymore questions you may have.

Thanks , With my two health care jobs I already have the cpr and the immunizations as well . I have 2 A's and B in the pre reqs classes and I have micro left in january. Im going to knock all the blue courses out this summer before my hopeful start up so I should probably mention that in my cover letter as well shouldn't I ? As far as the interview is there anything that can help you prepare for that if you are selected ? Do you know anyone else that didn't have a stellar gpa that got in as well ?

Although I am certainly no authority on this matter, I do feel it may be important to mention where you are at (I did). I saw the personal letter as a chance to sell myself, and I believe that is the point of it.

I did nothing to prepare for the interview and have also not had much experience with interviews, but personally I was not worried about it because that sort of thing comes pretty natural for me. So I am not much help on that one.

As a matter of fact I do know someone else with a GPA closer to mine that got in. As I said before though, I do have a feeling that it may depend on the number of applicants and how you rank in comparison. I have no idea how many applicants I was up against, but personally feel there either wasn’t many this time or somehow I ranked higher. Whatever the case may be, I do feel very fortunate to have been accepted. I would just do as I did, that is do everything you can to give yourself the best chance.

For some reason my above post double posted. I was unable to delete this post but obviously able to edit it.

did you take physiology and that nutrition course at kent state ? Im trying to find a course equiv at a community college in ohio and it seems to be hard. The price of kent state for undergraduate classes is very high and im trying to knock the blue courses out elsewhere.

Yes, I just took both at Kent State Stark Campus.

Congratulations to you all! It turns out that I will be applying to the fall UH cohort that starts this fall. I was wondering if anyone can tell me about what the interview process was like. I feel like I have everything in order- personal statement, resume, grades, etc. I'm most nervous about the interview because I don't have much experience with it. Any insight will be helpful! Thanks!

Specializes in PICU/NICU/CVICU.

I got my Bachelor's about five years ago and my GPA then was a 2.8. I should have my pre-reqs knocked out by the end of the summer with a GPA of around 3.7. I've worked as a pharmacy tech both part time and full time for about 10 years both in the retail and hospital setting. I don't have many volunteer hours but I plan to do some over the summer before I apply. Do I have a good shot?

Hi AF007 and everyone who is in the program!

Just read your post from last year that you are in the ABSN program at Kent and I have a question for everyone. I hope it is going great for all of you! I am trying to decide if I should apply to the daytime cohort or the evening/weekend. The thing is, I have to keep working two days a week to carry the health insurance for our family. Do you think it is possible to do this during the daytime schedule? I went to an orientation about it at Kent and I was told that normally classes are 3-4 days a week. I have no problem having to work on weekends, but I was worried I wouldn't have enough time for studying. I will have all the prereqs and blue classes finished beforehand. Please let me know what you think! I appreciate your time!

hi I applied into the fall 2014 program at Ashtabula, im hoping to get accepted soon. please let me know if you have started the program and how its going for you.

Thank you

I made an account because I wanted to provide some information here. I graduated with a biology degree and sat on it for a year before I decided to go nursing. I took all of my pre-reqs over the summer, received As, and took all of the classes I could take in the spring to lessen the load if I was accepted. I also volunteered at a hospital for 6 months once a week. I was granted an interview which lasted 10 minutes. Expect questions you think they would ask you. I was accepted. Many of my colleagues were granted an interview before, did not get accepted, and applied again for the next semester and are now in my cohort. Just keep trying, keep your grades up, volunteer, and take classes like stats, nutrition etc to increase your chances of getting in. Good luck to those who read this thread and are thinking about applying for the program!

Hello all! I would like to do the the Kent accelerated BSN program in a years. I graduated with honors with a finance degree, but it's not something I could see myself doing forever, and would now like to pursue nursing. Where did everyone take their pre-req courses? Are there any community colleges near Kent that offer all of them? I did not have any of the sciences my undergrad. Also, being in finance currently, does anyone have recommendations for how I can spruce up my nursing experience? Does anyone know of good nursing volunteer opportunities near Cleveland? Any suggestions are really appreciated. Thank you!
