How does a new grad LPN get "experience"?

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hello! I recently graduated from the LPN program at Hondros College, and am currently enrolled in their RN program. However, due to financial reasons, I have decided that I am going to have to postpone getting my RN, and go to work. (It was a difficult decision, but one that was unavoidable.) So, I have been looking for a LPN position in my area (Cincinnati/Dayton), and I have noticed that there aren't really that many options, and the ones that do exist require at least 1 year of experience. So, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can obtain "experience"! I am willing to work nights, and don't even mind working prn to get my foot in the door. Any advice would be appreciated! :)

I think your willingness to work even the bad shifts to get your foot in the door will set you apart.

Apply to the jobs anyway, especially if they "prefer" experience or want less than two years.

Also look at a lot of nursing staffing agencies. Even if their ads say experience, they have an obligation to fill these spots according for contracts and business, so they are more likely to accept candidates who don't fit perfectly and/or they'll know of a position with their contracted companies that didn't require experience.

Indeed.com is a great job search site, but I posted a few positions in Cincinnati that either didn't specify experience, or only wanted one year, just to help out a bit :)

Don't get too fazed by experience preferred or required - apply and cross your fingers, interview well, and let your enthusiasm help you get the job!
