Columbus Ohio=no new grad rn jobs

I'm a new grad RN( just passed boards a couple weeks ago). I went to school at Xavier University-graduated with my BSN in may, and relocated back to the columbus area.....one problem.....there is no new grad rn jobs

I started my job search back in JANUARY!literally.....I applied to the OSU residency for new grads----didnt get it b/c i didnt have the right "experience" - so i kept searching.....i have expanded my search to all of the major health care systems in the area including Ohiohealth, Mount Carmel and Nationwide Childrens. yep-not even had a call back..... I have had my resume re done 3 times.....twice by a HR specialist and former nurse recruiter.....

I spend all of my days-literally appyling for jobs...tweaking my resume and objective here and there and trying to network. I have even made leads with some of the nurse recruiters....some helpful.....some not. I even had a recruiter tell me "tough market, good luck" seriously though? you have got to be kidding me......I am a bachelors prepared RN, and cannot get a job within the hospital to gain essential bedside experience.

Im getting very very discouraged, being forced with the idea of relocating, and moving very far away from my family, friends and home yet once again. Not sure what I should do. Excess school bills are rolling in and im unemployed.....

I heard the other day that Columbus, OH is one of the worst cities in trying for trying to get a RN job. I am defiantly experiencing this. and i realize I am not the only new grad not getting hired......but i just dont know what to do anymore.....I'm really feeling helpless and discouraged to why did I even become a nurse in the first place. I always heard the saying that nurses always have jobs and theres a nursing shortage-that is a big fat lie.........if this was the case.....I probably would of went into another helping profession i.e. social work or something if I would of known there was going to be such resistance to hiring new graduate RNs across the country.

thanks for listening to me complain....but sometimes when i try to explain to my family what is going on.....they just dont understand......

Sadly, the rest of the states are not much better. I do know that the state hospital in Salem, Oregon is takingon new grads. It's psychiatric care, which isn't most peoples first choice, but may be better than LTC. Maybe there's a psych hospital place in your state, or if you cam move than I bet you can get on there. Just keep up the spirit. Most new grads I know have been looking at least four or more months before getting anything....and I do mean anything.

How about commuting to the cleveland area?

i know its a long haul but consider:

CCF, UH, LAKE HEALTH SYSTEMS, REGENCY, ST VINCENT/ST JOHNS/SOUTH WEST just to name a few...

Please don't consider Cleveland! There is almost nothing here, especially since the the entire Cleveland Clinic Health System is closed to external applicants (everyone--not just new grads) until the closure of Huron Hospital shakes out. Also, UH didn't have enough openings to meet its commitments to the nursing students it hired that graduated in May--and its new hospital, Ahuja, has a no new grads policy.

The only game in town right now would be the VA, MetroHealth, or Southwest General.

It's lousy up here, too. Out of the 37 of us who graduated with BSNs in May, only four have jobs lined up in Cleveland.

There are new grad jobs in Columbus. I just started at one of the hospitals and there were at least 10 new grads from my nursing school there in orientation, and I'm sure there were probably new grads from the other schools too. Keep trying and good luck.

Cleveland Clinic is not the end all of Nursing.. There are so many other places you can consider...

Besides, maybe you can start out at a LTAC to gain your 1 year experience and then move on....

Mount Carmel is very likely to hire new grads, try finding the name of a manager and handing your resume and cover letter in in person. I worked for Mt Carmel for 2 years and in that time there were around 10 new grads hired to my unit alone (which was a small ICU). Don't lose hope but keep this in mind: the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting to yield different results. So be constantly upgrading your resume, have a different and professional cover letter for every single job, keep networking and literally ASK for the job you want.

That being said, also apply to outlying hospitals. Try Dayton, Dayton childrens, Marion, Fairfield medical center in Lancaster, the VA in Chillicothe. Hope I helped a tiny bit.

I''m definatly not going to quit trying and thank you for the good luck wishes! :-) there much appreciated-big time lol....not sure if you mind me asking what hospital system you just got hired onto? I really am starting to lose hope.....I spoke to a recruiter in HR the other day, and she told me that for every 100 new grad applicants, there are about 3-4 available jobs.....not something I want to hear!!!!!

I did take my search outside the columbus area, including the dayton childrens and fairfield medical center. I have tried finding out managers on specific units at various hospitals, but their so damn secretive and give no information......

Do you think i should just walk in to various units within the hospital asking for the nurse manager and delivering my resume?

No, don't just show up. Somebody once gave me this piece of advice: If you want to find the name of the nurse manager of a unit, call the hospital, say you were a patient on that unit and want to know who to address your Thank You letter to. From what I hear, it works like a charm!
