Columbus Ohio=no new grad rn jobs

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

I'm a new grad RN( just passed boards a couple weeks ago). I went to school at Xavier University-graduated with my BSN in may, and relocated back to the columbus area.....one problem.....there is no new grad rn jobs

I started my job search back in JANUARY!literally.....I applied to the OSU residency for new grads----didnt get it b/c i didnt have the right "experience" - so i kept searching.....i have expanded my search to all of the major health care systems in the area including Ohiohealth, Mount Carmel and Nationwide Childrens. yep-not even had a call back..... I have had my resume re done 3 times.....twice by a HR specialist and former nurse recruiter.....

I spend all of my days-literally appyling for jobs...tweaking my resume and objective here and there and trying to network. I have even made leads with some of the nurse recruiters....some helpful.....some not. I even had a recruiter tell me "tough market, good luck" seriously though? you have got to be kidding me......I am a bachelors prepared RN, and cannot get a job within the hospital to gain essential bedside experience.

Im getting very very discouraged, being forced with the idea of relocating, and moving very far away from my family, friends and home yet once again. Not sure what I should do. Excess school bills are rolling in and im unemployed.....

I heard the other day that Columbus, OH is one of the worst cities in trying for trying to get a RN job. I am defiantly experiencing this. and i realize I am not the only new grad not getting hired......but i just dont know what to do anymore.....I'm really feeling helpless and discouraged to why did I even become a nurse in the first place. I always heard the saying that nurses always have jobs and theres a nursing shortage-that is a big fat lie.........if this was the case.....I probably would of went into another helping profession i.e. social work or something if I would of known there was going to be such resistance to hiring new graduate RNs across the country.

thanks for listening to me complain....but sometimes when i try to explain to my family what is going on.....they just dont understand......

OSU no longers hires anyone with a ADN. They must have a BSN. Sigh.

I have heard from several nurse managers that they will still consider someone with an ADN if that individual is a well-known and well-liked PCA at OSUMC. I know Children's only hires ADN nurses if that nurse is actively enrolled in a RN-BSN program.

I just graduated this past April and passed boards a few weeks ago. I live in NE Ohio, and I can't find anything! A good friend of my parents is the manager of a floor in a nearby hospital and he can't even convince HR to even look at a new grad...

I don't know what to think! I hear your story all the time, yet a girl I used to work with graduated a few months ago from an ADN program and got hired right away at Cleveland Clinic... and she's not from the area and had no connections. Her only experience was in psych and did not get a job related to psych. I don't get it!

From what I've been seeing, new grads are not welcome in most places, but especially ADN grads. Now Cincinnati has a bunch of new grad opportunities, and the Cleveland Clinic and Summa as well. But if you're anywhere in the middle of the state- you had better know someone or be prepared for a very crappy job.

I just graduated with my ADN, just took my NCLEX and was hired at OSU pending my NCLEX - I start the beginning of next month. So... but honestly it's who you know, if you work there, and what kind of worker you are. But to say that OSU completely doesn't hire ADNs is not true. The DON encourages hiring of BSNs and word is that Ross and James won't hire an ADN that isn't already accepted to a RN to BSN program.... but it is possible. I had to verbally commit to getting my BSN in the next 5 years.

And a girl I graduated with got a RN job at Children's without being enrolled in RN-BSN, but she already worked there as a PCA.

I don't think that there are any hard and fast rules. I often read that X hospital only hires grads from Y program or only hires BSNs or ADNs or people who work there, etc. I think that there are a lot of things that you can do as either a BSN or ADN student to increase your chances of getting a job as a new RN

1 - work part time as a PCA while in school

2 - take a preceptorship if at all possible for your capstone term

3 - work hard in your clinicals, talk to the staff, get the names and contact information for the nurse managers and introduce yourselves if at all possible

Did you try joining a staffing company? These people will call you with job openings. They may be for a day maybe a weeks and are always willing to pay a little extra because they really need the help :)

IMHO staffing agency jobs are for experienced RNs, not new grads. Just my 2 cents...

I was just offered two new grad positions at Mount Carmel (one at East and one at West). I accepted one and turned down the other, but from what I understood it sounded like both units were still hiring new grads. Search for 'New Grad' on their online application feature and the positions should come up. Good luck!
