Work Opportunities in Ohio at present time?

Good Morning Neighbors,

I have several cousins living and working in the Southern Ohio area presently, we speak on the phone about twice a month, and they are telling me the job situation is awful there right now. Both of them are working, but they say they have been called off within the past month twice. Low census. That surprised me, the bad weather would have been reason to need extra staff in many places.

So my question is, how is the job situation in your area of Ohio? What area are you in, SEO, SWO, NO, NEO, NWO. CO?
Just curious. Thanks for the time you take to anwer this.

So I guess everything is fine in the great state of Ohio. Everyone has great job opportunities, good salaries, and good benefits. Glad to hear it.

I would not come to Columbus. I am hearing jobs are kind of scarce.

I'm a new grad and just was offered a job at the cleveland clinic, I'm pretty excited to start. They have a program called "weekend visit" where you go for a weekend and interview on the unit of your choice. You should check it out.

Not me, the cousins need to check it out. They have a sister who lives there, so they could check it out and stay for free. Yes, they told me Columbus had all but dried up for work for nurses. I do not know, but seems to me that the market is flooded with RN's.

I'm in NW Ohio. Getting a job here is pretty competitive. There are a lot of schools here, so new grads competing too.

NE Ohio seems to be doing well. Cleveland is getting their new medical mart- I see a fair number of listings for STNAs, LPNs and RNs...

I just graduated in December, 2008, and I am being told by all central Ohio hospitals that they now require at least a years experience before being considered for a hospital position. Because of this...now all the nursing grads are competing for nursing home and home health positions, leaving those slim pickings as well. It's horrible! I feel sorry for the nurses still in school...there will be NOTHING when they get out.

Don't give up! I know for a fact that Good Samaritan and Children's Medical Center (in Dayton) hire new grads. A friend of mine graduated in Nov 2008, passed the NCLEX in Dec and started working for Children's right after the holidays. Good Sam recruits new grads regularly- my nursing supervisor, tries to recruit me on a weekly basis.

So don't give up

Talked with cousin last night, she is really discouraged and feeling down, working at a local facility and is not happy with the job. The facility seems to know the job situation is bad in the area and has been dumping more and more onto the nurses, so of course, the nurses are getting depressed and morale is low. She said the area from Marietta, Ohio down to Ironton, Ohio and into Columbus, Ohio is so saturated with nurses the facilities feel justified in expecting the nurses to do more work than ever and not to complain about lack of support, supplies, and poor conditions. I just wondered if anyone from the area has a different slant on the situation. I think she is a good nurse, good experience, and a dependable employee, BUT I am starting to wonder if she is depressed over her mother's death and all of the changes it brought to the family. Surely, there are a few decent jobs around the area, decent pay and working conditions. Something is just not right with her complaints and I just want to be able to talk with her honestly and maybe open to door to some counselling or coping sessions with a professional.
