New to Cleveland

I'm a new grad from the U of Iowa that was just offered a job at the Clinic on the Heart/Lung Transplant Unit. I'm super excited to get started in the next month, but the idea of moving to a city that I've never been too is kind of freaking me out!!!

What are the best areas to live in for a young adult/new grad? Most importantly, I'd like to live in a safer area with the shortest commute possible! I've been riding my bike almost everywhere for the past 5 years, is this possible around Cleveland? I would like to live relatively close to the Clinic and have been looking mostly at downtown, Cleveland Heights, and Shaker Heights. Let me know if I'm headed in the right direction!!

Hi- I lived in the Cleveland area for a little bit. I wouldn't suggest living downtown. It pretty much closes down after 9pm and gets kind of scary. Anyway, Cleveland Heights and University Heights would probably be the closest and best areas for you. If you want a bit of a commute Lakewood (where I lived) is nice too. It might be a bit of a jaunt by bike though given it took me about 15 min to get to downtown by car. They do have bus service from Lakewood to downtown (but not entirely reliable) though. And you can find pretty decent rent too in Lakewood (under $400/month incl utilities with roommates). I'm not sure about rent in University Heights or Cleveland Heights. I do know that U heights and C heights are both very nice areas. good luck. have any more questions just let us know.

Hi-
Also you may want to consider South Euclid or Mayfield Hts. They are about 7-9 miles from the clinic, but a little further out, closer to better shopping choices, major highways, and cheaper. Good neighborhoods too!

Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, and Mayfield are all nice! Stay away from Euclid and downtown, they are not the safest areas. Lakewood has a lot of young people and is a nice neighborhood, and it's about a 15 minute drive, but if I were you I would stay on the East side. The commute is much easier if you don't have to cross downtown. It's really not a bad commute even to go as far East as Willoughby or Mentor (both nice, more suburban than Shaker) or as far south as Beachwood (great shopping and very nice town) but they will be more like a 25 minute drive. Honestly though, the traffic isn't bad as long as you stay on the east side. Good luck! You will love the Clinic!
