Maumee, Ohio / I am moving there soon

Welcome to NW Ohio. St. Lukes is a good hospital to work at from everything I have heard- maybe the best in the area. It is very easy to get to, located just off an interstate and at the edge of Maumee. There is great walleye fishing within eyesight! Parking is good and the neighborhood is very nice. I know several nurses who work there and they wouldn’t work anywhere else in Toledo.

Of course, this makes it a difficult hospital to get in to because of low turn over. In addition, the net patient population of NW Ohio is in decline for a number of reasons. Furthermore, NW Ohio is overflowing with nursing schools and will be graduating around 900 nurses in April and May. This simple fact seems to be overlooked by the media, college admission counselors and even this discussion board. Of my class which graduated last year, only 4 found position in the Toledo area, two were let go due to a shortage of patients. I had to travel 3 hours away to a position and even there, nursing positions have become scarce. There seems to be a cognitive disconnect between the number student enrolled in nursing programs and projection of job opportunities in the near future. I won’t be surprised to see many graduate nurses in Ohio voicing their disbelieve about the lack of internship that are available here and the total lack of awareness by the academic community. Some parts of the country are still in need of nurses, but it is a lingering myth that a nursing shortage exists. I have no explanation for this, except that fact the academic institutions need to keep a steady stream of tuition paying students coming in to keep staff employed.

I agree with Lyela. I was at a job through a staffing agency, and they sold my position to a cheaper agency. so. I've been looking for a job for 4 months. And it's scary to believe that every 3 months these places are graduating nurses and there is eventually going to be no jobs for them. or me,,probably. I wish the media would stop telling people there is a nursing shortage and how great it is to be a nurse because of the money you'll make. I know so many people who are enrolling in nursing school for that reason. I wish you the best of luck and hope you can find a job that will make you happy!!

You have many options for hospitals in that area. Look at the following:
St. Luke's
Promedica system which includes Bay Park Community Hospital and Toledo Hospital
Mercy system which includes St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, St. Charles, St. Anne's
University of Toledo Medical Center
With that being said, I am being told by my friends in the area that nursing jobs are becoming harder to come by in the area, especially in hospitals. You may also want to consider nursing homes. There is also at least one LTAC in the area, Regency Hospital of Toledo.

I am a 3rd year nursing student (U of Toledo) and currently live in Maumee (ever need a sitter? lol). I just completed my women's health clinical at St Luke's and it is my favorite hospital I've been at for clinical so far (others are Toledo Children's & UT Medical Center). I've heard nurses that have worked at a handful of other area hospitals and they like Luke's the best.

That being said...it is a small hospital and like someone else said, the staff likes it there so they aren't leaving. From my apartment in Maumee it takes about 15 minutes to get to UTMC, and about 25 to get to Toledo Hospital and St. V's. Its not a horrible commute. Of course only about 5 minutes to St. Lukes.

There are a lot of nursing students graduating in the area and UT is also changing its program. They will have rolling admission and graduate three times a year (this is from memory, I think it is accurate) so that will pump out even more nurses.

Just some things to consider. I know you're already moving so you're going to have to get a job somewhere...I just wanted to tell you what I know about the area. Good luck!

Happy to have you in the Buckeye State! Maumee is on the SW side of Toledo, which means you also have access to some smaller hospitals away from Toledo. Check out Bowling Green (a university town) and Napoleon, each with unique facilities. I've completed some agency per diem shifts in Napoleon - a few years back - and was bowled over by the fantastic treatment of their permanent staff. The drive to and from work would be relaxing countryside. Medical College of Ohio Hospital would be worth a stop, as well. Best of luck!

Flower is also not too far away up 23. It's a Mercy hospital which also includes St V's & St Anne's.
