Cincinnati Hospitals

Hey harley fan, I have wondered about the pay rates. I am a new RN( have been an LPN for 3 years) and have not really called alot of hospitals. It may have something to do with the cost of living here.Let me know what you find. I am looking into Miami valley hospital they have an intern program seems really good

I think it's cost of living. In Dayton almost all hospitals I've talked to start at roughly $21. My BF's sister is an OR nurse with 3 yrs nursing experience and at Cincinnati Children's was making $23. Now she's at Dayton Children's making the same amount of money.

Harley_fan, I'm interested in finding out the same info as well about Cincinnati. I have a job offer at Good Samaritan but the base pay for new grads is like $20.35...which I think is kinda low. They do have a $3 shift diff which is nice and other bonuses for working nights and weekends. I am wondering if this pay is comparable to others in the area. HR says they are competitive rates for the Cincy area. I have another offer around the Cleveland, Ohio area and it is much higher than that...around $24/hr (though this is slightly higher than other hospitals in that area)! However, if you get the bonuses and such for working nights and shift diff, it actually comes out more than cleveland.

What is the cost of living like? It seems very similar to Cleveland what I have found online. I was hoping it would be cheaper since starting pay is so much lower.

While it is nice that Cleveland is paying 4 dollars more, what is the cost of living there compared to cincinnati? I am finding that 21 is the norm here in cincinnati. Now California is paying 28 /hour but then again the cost of living is high. You must take that into account. Find out how much a house or apartment will cost and compare the difference.
If you making 24/hour X 36 hours at $864/week in cleveland(lets for get the bonuses for now because things like that can change)
and you are making 21/hr X36 at 756/week.The difference is only 108 dollars. You have to look at the bottome line not just the dollars paid out to you. Most places offer a bonus so I dont know if that is an issue but in my opinion it seems silly to choose to go to one place or another for an extra 3 dollars on the hour. I woud check out the perks of living in each place(pros and cons) and make you decision based on all aspects of your potential move. I hope this helps

I'm a new nursing grad who just started working this week at University Hospital in Cincinnati. I can assure you that $21/hr is the going rate in this area. University is part of the "Health Alliance" which consist of over six major hospitals (University, Christ, Jewish, St Luke East and West, Fort Hamilton, and Drake). So far my experience with the organization has been favorable. University offers many perks such as excellent continuing education programs, $5,000 sign on, reimbursement for tuition and the fact it is the only Trauma 1 hospital in the area with a great deal of experience to offer.

shiamay, congrats on starting your new job! I looked into University hospitals but did not find any openings in the area I want to work in (NICU). Do you know anything about Good Samaritan (owned by Trihealth)? What areas in Cincy do you recommend living?

SShannon81, you make a good point about cost of living. I have looked online at apartments in both Cleve and Cincy and they do seem comparable actually. I am doing more research now though to find more cost info on apartments, houses, utilities, food, etc....I need to take all of that into consideration! Cleveland is more run down I think than Cincinnati....some of the Cleve neighborhoods aren't that nice and/or safe, but there are some nicer areas which are pricey! I have only been to Cincinnati twice and from driving around a little, it seems like most of the areas/suburbs are pretty nice and seems much safer. I should take that into consideration. Money isn't the most important thing to me right now, though I am taking it into consideration. I am more interested in the hospitals and particularly the unit I would be working on. i just moved to cinci from fla and loving it so far (back in fla for 25 more days finishing up classes, but the dogs and fiance are up there =( ) our cost of living is much cheaper there. paying $835 a mo to rent a HUGE condo!! ahhh it's grrreat. Lots of young singles live in hyde park. fun area

I know a few classmates who went to work at Good Sam. I know they were just looked at for Magnet Status and were denied. This dosen't mean much! Considering you want NICU have you looked into Childrens or the Shriners hospital, which are very close to University.

As far as places to live, the Eastside of Ciny is booming...Kenwood and the Norwood are are very trendy and forward. Also, across the river in Covington, KY is a nice place to consider. Traffic in the Ciny area is not that bad. I moved to the area from Washington, DC so compared to the traffic there anyplace else is sweet. There are many great hospitals in Cincinnati and Kentucky. I am sure you will find one that is right for you.

You can also look into the surounding cities around cincinnati. Lots of hospitals are moving up north towards Dayton&Middletown up Highway 75. In fact Middletown Regional is opening a new hospital very soon, Children's is building a hospital in Liberty Township( near Tylersville RD), there are also good hospitals in Dayton(Miami Valley, dayton heart Hosp etc) and the cost of living is lower in Dayton and Middletown(thats where I live. I like that you can live so cheap here and the neighborhoods are very nice along with the fact that you are smack dab in the middle of everything. 30 min to get to cincy and dayton both.Also the fact thatso many of the shops and such that I used to drive to cincinnati or Dayton for are being built or have already moved here. Its nice to make Dayton /cincinnati money and live so cheap in Middletown.I hope you find what you are looking for ladies.You can PM me if you have any questions though)
