Who do you see as an OB?

by Mary C

As a L and D nurse, my health insurance only covers innetwork OB/GYN... DH are TTC and I have HPV which requires freqent exams. How did you pick which physician to go to? Is it a bit strange to have your co-workers involved in your reproductive health? Did anyone deliver at the hospital they work at?

Does your insurance plan have an option to pay more for additional providers that are outside of the network? That would be optimal, especially given the sensitivity of your situation.

Does your system have more than one health care center? Mine does and infertility was at a different location. I didn't know anyone there at all. They were wonderful as well. Also I am currently planning on delivering at the hospital I work at. I have absolutely no contact with the staff in L&D at all. If I did work there I may not want to have my baby there but at a different approved hospital.

There is two other hospitals in network- a hospital about 25 minutes away I could deliver @ when the time comes!!! I bet I could get an ob out of them too!

I see a CNM that I work with. She is days and I am nights so it isn't too weird. In every instance (unless I am high risk) I would choose midwifery care over OB care.

Another vote for CNM care- I would never see an OB unless I somehow became high risk.

I am also curious why your HPV requires frequent exams? That isn't usually the case unless there are some underlying issues- perhaps you have gotten bad/weird advice? Generally colpos, etc are held off until the end of pregnancy anyway.

Many nurses deliver in the L & D where they work and many choose not to- it's all up to your personal preference if there are other hospitals available.

I currently work in a rural hospital that is the only one within 3 hours of here. Most of my coworkers deliver here. They choose their labor nurse in advance and talk with her about it. If they're planning on an epidural, or know they are having a section, they often choose their anesthesia provider and OR crew in advance too.

Even when I lived in cities and my coworkers had more choice, they usually delivered at the hospital where they worked. I'm talking about L&D nurses who know the staff, both medical and nursing.

Yes, it's a little creepy the first time you have an internal exam done by someone you work with, but you wouldn't have chosen that person if he/she weren't professional. I find it a little creepy having an internal exam done by anyone other than my sexual partner anyway.

Thanks for the info. I'm not pregnant yet. My previous providers had been seeing me every 3 months because I had progressed. Since I'm just ASCUS at the last pap, I've gone back to yearly! Also, I'm not pregnant yet-- the husband and I are just trying for one. It was just something I was a bit concerned about. The midwives that deliver at our hospital are actually much more physician like then the one physician I love. He has a very low c-section rate, he is calm and really takes control of a situation, and he sits down and discusses EVERYTHING. He's great with my patients and I think he'd be good with me.

I'd love midwifery care-- but my only options aren't much of an option for me.

I think I would deliver in my hospital but SVEs are kind of a handshake in our business, so why should I be shy?
