"I am not sure how they do them over there in Finland, but over here there is anesthesia for the baby."
I was just concerned that you gave the impression to someone from a different country that babies here are routinely numbed for the procedure.
Not a big deal - just wanted to clarify for someone who might not know.
Thanks.

Re: When circ's go bad...
I know some peds who won't give a block because they think it's as painful as the actual circ itselft.

Our doc won't do it because he is afraid of nerve damage and he might hurt the ability of the baby to have full sexual function - he says it has happened. Probably verrrryyy rare.
Yeah, a shot hurts just as much as ripping the end of a penis off. Right.

Re: When circ's go bad...
I was "lucky enough" to observe a circ in nursing school, and it just struck me as so unnatural. Reading this thread has only strenghtened me in my conviction not to have my son circumsized. My husband wasn't too happy at first, when I told him how I felt. But I've done research online, and my husband came around after a while. He is circumsized, and he even stands up to his family, who thinks I'm nuts about this. I am aware that the majority of circs go fine, but I'm unwilling to subject a newborn to even a remote possibility of anything going wrong, purely in the name of tradition. After all, no one cut anything off of my genitals, and just look how I turned out. | | No. 244 |

Re: When circ's go bad... I will say this: I saw one circ go VERY badly. And this child will be scarred for life. Having personally witnessed this, it was the impetus for me to change my thinking since......I did a lot of reading and research on my own in the last 8 years.
(my son is circ'd....but today if he were born now, I would probably opt not, if I could talk the dh into it---it is simply not a procedure I want to put a child through needlessly.)
Having seen my son through major surgery as a baby (besides the circumcision) and having done the research, I can't see putting him to any risk fo such privately aesthetic reasons! (but I respect differing opinions---I just wish more would do more thinking than, "I want him to look like DAD", when electing to put their child through a major procedure like a circ).
There, my not-so-humble, not-so-quiet opinion......

I'm sure it is because in this area, there are very few uncirc'd men and the ones who are are teased . . at least in jr/sr high school.
A man and his penis . . . . .

I have seen this argument frequently used in defense of circumcision. Although I was a small, unathletic, wimpy child, and picked upon a bit because of that, no one ever teased me about being uncircumcised. Boys simply did not discuss other boys' genitals. I do not even know what the rate of circumcision was back in school, as I was not that interested. In sixth grade, we had to urinate into a common trough. Public urination not being one of my talents, I always had trouble getting started. One of my classmates used to tease me about this, but again, no one ever commented about circumcision. When I was in the hospital in 2003, none of the EMTs, nurses, or doctors who saw me naked teased me either, , nor did anyone mention it.
Today, boys are much less likely to even see their classmates naked. See Dr. Dobson's article: http://troubledwith.custhelp.com/cgi...hp?p_faqid=930
Wikipedia has a good article about circumcision. It has two photographs, a circumcised and an uncircumcised adult penis and scrotum, so you have been warned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumcision
I did not click on the (enlarge) link, but I assume you get larger pictures, rather than causing the penises to become erect .
As indicated in this article, circumcision is rare outside of the U.S. Since circumcision is increasingly being considered cosmetic surgery, and therefore not covered by insurance, the rate will continue to decline. It seems that dad is not as interested in his son looking like him when dad has to pay the bill.
Informed consent advocates have gone far beyond opposing infant circumcision. Check out the Intersex Society of North America: http://www.isna.org/
They favor holding off on genital surgery on intersex infants until the infant is able to provide informed consent.

I was going to say that myself, but you beat me to it. I don't understand the notion that a circ somehow makes the organ "nice looking"....they are all not for public view, anyhow!

Funny how the guys actually want it done.

Well, my dh's not circ'd and he's glad. Bottom line, men LOVE their penises circ'd or not! | | No. 249 |

Thanks for the info.
I asked my sons and they say that boys DO make comments and notice, especially the "who is bigger?" . . . .one very nice and really smart oriental kid was NOT circ'd and I heard many comments . . .. they just do it behind the kid's back.
Not a good reason to circ, in my opinion . . I was just letting folks know that some boys are happy being circ'd.
Also, my kids (male and female) do shower after PE and sporting events. My boys always showered after their football games.
